Hi guys I have a 94 superjet with a 61x. It has a protec pipe on it and a 46mm carb. I can’t seem to get it tuned right. It has a low end bog. I had to put my carb screws about 3 turns out on both and can’t seem to get the power I need and still have somewhat of a bog. Has good top end though you just can’t let off and come down to low rpm and punch it or it with take a second to get going again. Ive had two shops look through my carb and said it’s alright.
My high jet is 145.7
My low is 120
Bore-stock
Gold pop off spring.

you can’t tune out a lean or rich condition on the bottom with the low speed mixture screw, that should only be used to adjust your mixture at/off idle. You’re most likely having pop off pressure issues.
Did you establish if it’s for sure lean or rich on the bottom? If you cruise at 1/4 throttle for a minute and open it up does the ski hesitate as if it’s going to shut off or does it bawble and carry on before clearing up?
When you let off the throttle up top does it stumble and clear up or does it actually hesitate?
Sounds to me like your pop off is too low and you have a rich condition down low.
when your zipping up top and let off the throttle there is excessive fuel being dumped ontop of your throttle butterfly and when you open her up again it’s taking a second to clear up all that excessive fuel.

Before you haul the carb off and start playing inside do the simple things first. Is there any kind of play in the throttle shaft at the bushings? Is the throttle butterfly valve properly round inside the carb throat or are there square ding marks on the outer edges where the valve meets the throttle shaft? Do you see any sort of fluid leak or seepage around the throttle shaft seals? If yes to any of these you need a throttle shaft rebuild kit. If the ski ran well any time in the past but has suddenly started doing this possible lean running condition, start with checking for loose or sloppy moveable hardware first. Just remember, all the air must come in through the top of the carb only, if there are any leaks anywhere, you will never tune that engine or tune it well.

You say it's a 94 61x engine, do you know how old the gaskets, crank seals and bearings are? If it's an original 61x engine then it would be a 27 year old original engine, crank seals are a wear item and have a shelf life...27 years is really pushing it on a 2-stroke. Those seals could be spent and/or the crank bearings. With worn crank bearings the crank will be allowed to travel up and down inside the bearings opening up an air gap between the crank seals and the crank. This will also make for a lean running condition that will never be tuned out.

Ok thanks guys! I looked and it had a gold spring that was trimmed and I believe it’s a 2.5 needle. I’m going to go to the lake today and I’ll get a video of it. I usually put it up against the dock with the hood off and then my skis there. I’ll also check into the throttle shaft.

What impeller do you have? It is impossible to get rid of your power lag if the pump is overloading the engine. This is a common problem by the way! As far as the carb goes, get the pop-off between 25-30 psi and leave it. Get pilots in every size from 120-130 and a 160, 170, and 180 main. The carb work may fix your problem but maintenance on the entire ski needs to be accomplished.

Do you have a link to a good pop off tester I could buy?

Was at the lake with someone having the exact same issue on dual 48’s that ended up being a clogged low speed jet on the rear carb. I know you have a single carb but you did check to make sure you are unobstructed on your low jet correct? Could also explain your condition that clears up when you get onto the main jet
