I had a regulator/rectifier go bad on my old 550 and it did the same thing. Melted the ground wire to bare metal and hot boxed the flywheel cover and ebox.

we had been in the e-box fixing a broken/corroded battery terminal to the starter relay. the ebox was a bit of a rats nest and maybe we unplugged a connection without realizing it trying to get everything to fit back in there...?

This just decided to fix itself and has given me any problems since. Would it have been the Bendix getting in the wrong position or something?

Pulled flywheel and couldn't find any evidence of a hot spot on the stator coils or wires???

its just waiting , it will rear its ugly head at the most inopportune time and you will know then .. but it wont just get better . you did say starter turns weak , so just clean all your battery connections , ground and pos cables , at all points ,,,, eng/ starter /battery , then you'll know its not them and can go on from there !

starter only turned weak when it did it. sounded strong the 10-15 times ski was started before and hasnt sounded weak since. that is why i was trying to figure out if it was a one time fluke like the bendix got jammed up or something...
