SN Hood Repair

Best way to repair this: go!

I’m a little bit retarded when it comes to fiberglass

For a quick fix I would grind it from the inside and taper it toward the outside with a shasllow taper on it going into the old material at least an 1 -2 inches the more the better, then get come cardboard and duct tape or packing tape , cover one side of the cardboard with the tape then tape that to the outside of the hood with the pretaped side facing inward , the fiberglass won't stick to the tape , now you have a mold of sorts to lay the glass against , mix up epoxy resin and start laying in pieces of glass , you start with a piece slightly bigger than the broken area the continue with larger pieces each time, with 4OZ glass you will need a good 6 to 8 layers of glass , don't worry about it sticking out on the top past the broken area you cam trim that off with a grinder later.

The key thing to take away from this is the repair needs to extend into the good fiberglass at least 1-2 inches on all three sides of the repair as that is where it gets its strength from , of course that means it needs to be ground back the same amount.

Sounds pretty easy! I bought cloth from HD, doesn’t specify what OZ it is.

Most cloth you get at auto parts stores or Home depot-Lowes is 4 oz, you want cloth mat , it doesn't matter as long as it's cloth and not chopped mat , the resin matters it has to be epoxy or it won't hold.

So the bondo resin won’t work? Needs to be epoxy?
Absolutly will not work, you could do the whole repair with that resin, let it fully dry then put a screwdriver under the edge and the whole thing will peel off like Bondo on a Bondo spreader.

I know buying epoxy resin is expensive but look into one of these products , probably costs about the same as the Bondo resin did , you can laminate with either it's just a little more difficult . Of the three the G flex will be easist to laminate with the other two are more difficult but build faster and require less layers of glass .

You can buy a small amount of epoxy resin at Hobby Lobby or similar craft stores. I've been using this....

I have compared the tech data sheets to West Systems.......it's basically the same stuff.

There is a lot of it out there , the resin I have been using lately is SC110 epoxy resin I get off or Ebay but I saw a link on Facebook the other day and found this, that's a pretty decent price, on epoxy of course the smaller the quantity is the more the markup is , I am going to try some the Resinist epoxy , the color of the epoxy doesn't mean squat on what I am doing, if it doesn't work out I will make some river tables with it.

Well got some glass down, think I had 12 layers of cloth on it. Got it trimmed down and rough sanded. Need to fine tune and I’m going to lay a few layers on the outside of hood and get the profile a bit nicer. Not liking how it’s sitting on the hood seal.
