I was always told that "fish" was brain food. Good for cognitive thinking etc...

I'm gonna start riding lakes, ponds and puddles. (so I can qualify for disability via amoeba brain loss) LOL!!

is this new? or is it something that has just been discovered?

It must be a difficult thing to study! So many have so few brain cells to start with, and so many don't seem to be able to use the cells that they have left.....

we were just discussing these things sitting out in the Gulf last weekend...
Honestly, I can't stand riding in freshwater, just seems unnatural to me.

Nope, not new. My test lake is a cooling lake for a power plant. It is very suspect for this bacteria.
They won't let people swim in the lake, but you can boat, ski etc. I did a lot of research about the bacteria.
I think the name is Negleria... I'm on my phone, can't research.

But if you look at the statistics, 30 people have died in the last 10 years I think.
It's nasty stuff though, it will kill you in roughly 15 days, first it seems like a headache, and proceeds with symptoms like hallucinations etc, it's more or less eats your brain. It's often misdiagnosed the first 7 days, and by the time they figure out what it is it's too late.
They've never been able to save someone who gets infected because it's so aggressive, they don't have a chance to try out a cure.

Warm, shallow water is most suspect, 85* and up from what I remember.

While its nasty scary stuff, the likelihood of contracting it is extremely low. I'm not gonna stop riding out of fear of this stuff.

I read on Msnbc i think about that :):):):). They theorize that most people get it, some people just have it go high order for some weird reason and die. As said, it's insanely rare, and cases are spread out.
