This is a full carbon flatwater hull that was built by PJX in the US after they bought the molds from the Brazilian company XFT. People new to the sport may not know about XFT but they were very popular in the mid 2000s and introduced some of the features that have become standard on newer freestyle hulls. The hull is full carbon with a lightweight core material and is super stiff despite only weighing around 60 pounds. My heavily reinforced SJ hull flexes more than this thing despite weighing twice as much.
At first glance it looks a lot like an SJ but look closer and every aspect has been changed. The top deck has been lowered several inches and the sides angle outward to match the wide bottom deck. This gives you some extra room to wrench and easily fits a B pipe chamber without rubbing the side. The deck also bulges out at the footholds to allow for a wider stance. The bond line is not curved like most short hulls but the profile of the bottom deck has a deep rocker so burying the nose on a setup wake isn't an issue.
Length from front to back of chine is 71” and the bottom width is 23” at the widest point. Comparable measurements on an SJ are 87” and 21”. This thing is very short and nimble and a lot of fun to ride. It goes where you point it and carves hard. Just for fun I tried some old school tricks like nose spins, bulldogs and broncos and was able to ride them out with some difficulty because it spins so quickly. Definitely not what the ski is designed for but I think its proof that it handles well.
This hull has a unique pump setup that I haven't seen on any other hulls. You have the option to add a second wear ring to the pump, which is meant to mimic the effects of an aftermarket setback pump. I don't have a true setback pump that I can swap to compare, but the double wear ring setup hooks up very well. You can also run the pump in the stock configuration with a single wear ring but it would require a shorter driveshaft so I haven't tried it. The pump tunnel is 1.5 inches longer than an SJ and was originally set up with a 155mm pump shoe but I swapped in an aluminum 144mm pump shoe and reshaped the tunnel to smooth any abrupt transitions.
Since the front end is so short I was not able to fit in a stock waterbox. I ended up using a Jetmaniac SJ box but had to cut and weld the outlet at a different angle so that it would sit flat. I also installed a custom aluminum resonator downstream from the waterbox that helps to quiet it down. It has a really nice throaty sound that won't tick off neighbors on the other side of the lake. If you don't care about noise level it can can easily be removed in a couple minutes.
The engine is a 701 with 62T cases that was built by an old school mechanic who used to build engines for Joe Kenney and some of the OG riders back in the day. It is by far the strongest 701 that I've ever ridden and has enough power to land clean flat water barrel rolls on an OEM SJ hull. An experienced rider should be capable of pulling some clean flips because I've nosed some in and have virtually no experience riding a short hull.
This ski has been ridden only five times due to work, travel, having a toddler and all the other things that take priority. It is in near perfect condition and I hate to sell it but I've finally accepted that I enjoy doing old school tricks and chasing boats on my SJ more than flipping.
I'm in Vancouver WA, next to Portland OR and can meet up for a test ride if you are serious about buying. $8,500 cash only.
