Some things I should know???

Check the outside of the pole at the top sides just below the pad. They crack there often. And it is a real pain to try to fix it better off to just buy aluminum when that happens.

Well aluminum plates on the inside and out will fix it but then you have to wrap the pole with Duct taps so that you don't get cut on the plates of metal.
 
check the pole around the pivot point and the upper under the pad.check stress cracks on the nose area in the upper corners were the pole bracket mounts.
check the hood for cracks in the inner liner or cracks in the seal area.compression should be about 150 to 175.
otherwise they are pretty reliable
check inserts for ride plate as they can pound into the glass and crack it also.
