Can a bad start/stop make a motor crank but not spark? Or do they both not go when the switch is broken?

I know it for sure can happen on a kawasaki. I think yamaha as well. if the contacts are stuck closed by corrision or a short. unplug the stop connection(black and blue wires I believe), then you can check spark to see if you have it. Or simply unplug at the connector and check ohms between the black and blue wires at the harness. should be OFL, no continuity. If you start with that connector unplugged you cant shut it down, unless you plug back in.

Yes. If you try cranking while holding in the stop button, then there will be no spark. Try disconnecting the black and white wires and try to see if you get spark

If you get spark with the black and white wire disconnected, pull apart the switch and there are these little brass contacts that might be all black. if they are clean them and put it back together. i have done it several times, works every time and saved my self the hassle of having to buy a new switch.

I am actually running through this issue right now with my ski. i would have to review the colour's again but currently i operate it with no Kill switch by disconnecting I believe the white connector.

Another issue I have found is that with the stock CDI the battery can get low enough that it will turn the motor and show a weak spark but not fire the engine. I fought with this for a few hours this summer before turning it over repeatedly with out firing draing the battery enough that I dug out the charger. Imediatly after putting a boost to it my machine fired. It seems that the spark although visible, was too weak. Real pain figuring this out.

You can test both the start circuit and the lanyard/stop circuit using a multimeter on ohms.

Mine was corrodid and would flake off and on so that the machine would start, run and then randomly die.

Breaks in the wires can also be a problem.

Good luck.

Can crank over but also no spark.

Exactly. This could be your problem you posted about earlier. Unscrew s/s/s from bars and inspect the rubber boot over the lanyard switch, if it is broken then it needs to be fixed or replaced.
