Start/stop switch issues

I swapped handlebars yesterday, when I re installed the start/stop switch on the new handlebars everything was fine. Then tried to start and the starter stayed on (even with disconnecting the lanyard). Then I had to disconnect the battery for it to stop. Have taken it apart and everything looks fine. I have it loaded with white grease and there was no moisture inside. I then held my finger over the lanyard switch when apart and it still wanting to turn over when battery is connected. Anyone know what's going on here, was working perfect before I took it apart. I didn't put any strain on the wires, just simply took it apart and put them on the new bars. What is going on ?

What would cause the relay to just crap out? And how would this effect the lanyard and stop button not to work ?
Relay can just wear out too from use besides moisture problem. Once the relay locks up, your starter is direct wired to the battery and the start stop switch has no affect on it.

A quick way to eliminate the start/stop switch as the culprit is to test it with another switch. You can do this by putting two ski's (Yamaha's, obviously) side-by-side and and disconnecting the start/stop loom connections and trying to start the 'ski with the issue from the start/stop switch of the other 'ski. Takes seconds to diagnose. I always carry a spare start/stop assembly as I've had several fail on me over the years and I'm sick of having my day ruined for want of a spare. If you still have issues after this test you probably have the fault described by other posters before me.

No, a better way is to disconnect the black white wires and try to start. Also no need to carry extra used parts when a new start stop is 79-159 depending on if you want the whole thing or just the inside guts and wires.
