ok I got the exhaust off the ski and got the starter out, and it seems like its on good shape. it spins good at least. this is way different than my old 550. so i kind of need to know if i have this figured out. the starter fits in to what I think its called the starter clutch. when the starter spins up it causes some kind of spring to push part of the starter clutch out and it then ingages with the fly wheel. right? then when the starter stops spinning it shinks back in? I didnt realize the starter and the starter clutch were 2 peices so I think i took all this apart for nothing to get the starter out. :cheer: the clutch is pretty rusty. I think it might not be doing its job right. I guess i need to pull the flywheel to get it out? also is the spring in the little hole on the flywheel cover imprtant? its pretty rusty too. probably isnt moving like it should. when i puller the cover the clutch was just kinda loose in there. I think i positioned it right now but it isnt spinning out like i think it should. I need some opinions. here are some pictures...

it's called a bendix. yes, you have to pull the flywheel to get it out. that is also a tough job but very do-able. If you heard the starter spin and it didn't turn the motor over then you have a bad bendix for sure.

Let me know if you need directions on getting it out. you will need a fly wheel puller from an auto parts store to pull it out.

ok. thanks man. I have pulled the fly wheel on my 550, but the motor was out then. I guess I need to take the gas tank out... on my 550 I just tightened it down with an impact wrench. is that ok to do on a superjet?

where should I get the bendix at (cheapest) I know wax has them but thats to much for this ski.

where should I get gaskets at? I need the flywheel cover, exhaust manifold and the lower head pipe.

Try cleaning and oiling the bendix. They some times rust up and then do not kick out to engage the flywheel.
Also centrifical force when the starter spins the bendix is what causes it to kick out and then the spring in the flywheel cover pushes it back into place.

If you are looking at getting a used one this might help.
The bendix's are the same for:
kawa 650, 750, 900, 1100 (not ultra150)
yamaha 650 701 760 1100 1200 (not sure about the PV motors)
Polaris 650, 750 Maybe more

I'm sure there are more, but those are ones I know of.

I have not heard great things about those new ones.
You might be better off buying a cheaper used OEM one. find somebody parting out a freshwater sitdown. That's be a pretty safe bet.

Well a nice used one would be 1/2 that much. I bought a used one to replace my rusted sticking one last year for $30 shipped. I have also soaked them in oil or tranny fluid to bring them back to life. But it might not be worth it with that custy one.

Put up a looking for post on that other site. You will find one cheap.
