Starter Opinion

Hey All,

OK...I probably know the answer to this one....but I'm hoping there is an easier way out ;-)

I picked up one of those crap $99 starters on eBay last season and the Bendix is starting to stick out. Nothing a little smacking of the flywheel cover with a rock won't cure....but that won't fly in the middle of the lake [8(]

So will I most likely have to toss the starter (I have a spare used proper starter) and replace it? or is there something I can do to stop it from sticking out?

TIA

Cheers

Thanks guys,

So...I've swapped out a starter, but never replaced just the Bendix. I assume I'm pulling the starter to get at it??

Of course I guess if I do that I might as well just swap it out for my more durable used starter eh ;-)

You'll need to remove the flywheel cover and flywheel and the bendix will come right out. Try to pick up a good used OEM bendix if possible. None of the aftermarket ones seem to be as good. If yours is only a bit sticky, a good oil soaking may fix it.

John at JSS told me to first soak the bendix in mineral spirits. Let it dry, then soak it in any weight motor oil for like 1-2 days... the let it dry completly before re installing... He also said the closely inspect all the little spring on the inside. Also inspect the large washer looking things in the middle for cracks.

Sweet...thanks guys....glad to hear I can get at it from the flywheel side.

I'm installing a RAD lightened wheel pretty damn quick anyways...so I'll do it all at once!

For now....a rock will do...and I'll stay close to shore
