starter wire grounded out

i have a 701 and the starter wire is grounded out throughout the whole engine any thing that could cause this?

The starter wire will read ohms to ground because the brushes directly rest on the copper inside.

This is what I was assuming he was seeing.

He could be referring to the positive lead grounding out to the starter body too. When the brushes get worn so much that people keep holding the start button, it heats up the positive post on the starter...A LOT...then it melts the plastic insulator and the threaded post grounds out against the starter body.
