Steering Cable (Plastic Threaded part)

I was wondering if Yamaha made a tool to easily remove/install the white plastic threaded part during a steering cable replacement. Its located outside, underneath, in the rear of the ski.

If there is one where could i purchase it?

This is on a 1996 Yamaha superjet

I just use a needle nose vice grips. Need to remove the ride plate first.

I tried them and they work, but it boogers up the outside of it and thats kinda frustrating. I figure theres got to be the right tool for the job.

Need something like an O2 sensor wrench.

Yeah it boogers them but I have about 10 replacements. After you remove it the first time you don't need it that tight.

Also you could grind down a wrench to work using tye box side.

Yea i cut a small portion off a 1 1/16" wrench but it was still to thick for the first piece that threads into the hull. I guess i should just grind it down to make its depth thinner? It works well for the larger piece that threads onto the first piece but 1 1/16" doesn't seem like the right size.

Take a 1 1/16" socket, cut it in half, take a piece of 1" pipe 1' long and weld one piece of the socket to one end and the other piece of the socket to the other end...BAM!

I just used a pair of channel locks, I was careful and I don't see any damage on mine

Take a length of 1" or 1.25" pvc pipe and heat an end enough to make moldable. Quickly stick on around the cable and nut and let cool for a minute. Now you have a pvc socket for future use.
