Superjet midshaft greasing question

Hello,

I recently did a 61x swap on my 92 square nose. And while I was in there I noticed that the intake had a grease zerk fitting on it. After I did the engine swap I figured I should add some grease since I had never done that, so I gave it a few good pumps and didn't think about it again. I took the newly 701'd square nose out. As I was sliding it back onto its garage stand I saw some random grease on the bottom of the hull near the prop shaft. Reading on forums such as this, that said if you overfill that midshaft housing it can pop the seal out and destroy the midshaft seal and bearings etc.

I pulled my midshaft housing to see if I had popped the seal. It doesn't appear to be popped or loose, and it looks like the grease basically squeezed between the midshaft and the rubber seal. Then got slung on the bottom of the ski as it worked its way down the shaft.

I guess my question is, does the seal actually pop out or tear? Everything appears intact, and the bearings still feel smooth. I have worked on lots of cars and motorcycles and usually I can identify a bad seal. It looks pretty normal to me, and the ski wasn't taking on any excess water through the midshaft as far as I could tell.

I apologize if this has been gone over before, I used the search function and was unable to find what I needed.

Yes, you "can" over grease the housing, and push the seals out. Sounds like this didn't happen to you.

The grease only goes between the seals to help keep water out, as the bearing is actually a sealed bearing.

Your ski is old, and I am sure your seals are worn some allowing grease to escape.

Hard for me, or anyone to know with out actually seeing/feeling your assembly, but it sounds like you are OK.

Thanks for your help!

Here are a few pics, the seal has some grease seeping out, but looks ok to me.

Hard to say if grease is seeping out because you pumped too much, OR cause your seals are old/worn. Your housing looks pretty nice in your pics, as long as your bearing is not loose/sloppy I would guess you are ok.

Thanks for the help, I think you were right, I pumped too much grease and it seeped out. Bearings felt good, have ridden it 3 times since then and no more grease on bottom of the hull.
