Superjet wont start, just backfires

Okay so i am at the end of my build and put the engine in yesterday. Its a 701 61x matching cases. Carb is a 44 and has a fresh rebuild on it. I did have the flywheel off and the stator, but i did make sure to put the key in and line up the stator marks. It has a MSD enhansorand I went through the electrical box. Now i had to replace teh stator, so i pulled on off a wra 700, could this be my problem? or what do you all think? It sounds like it wants to start. I have clear gas lines and can see fuel going to the carbs, but I cant figure this one out and a search didnt help much. BTW its a 6m6 flywheel, could that make a difference. I was told 61x and 6m6 wouldnt matter.

I forgot!
its a long shot but are the wires for the plugs hooked up to the proper cylinder? i can't remember if the stock coil fires both plugs at the same time or not. when i heard backfire i tend to think timing issues.

Both plugs fire a the same time. Disconnect the stop switch, white/black wire plug and see if this helps. Next I would try a stock CDI and see if it runs. If so I would guess that you might have a bad enhancer. If the stock CDI does not solve the problem then I would check the stator.

it does backfire when I let off the starter button. Does anyone know if MSD has any kind of warranty, it isnt a new unit, but maybe they would honor something.

they will gladly honor your purchasing a new enhancer from them:Banane09:

if its backfiring when you let off of the starter button, thats a tell/tell sign of a defective msd enhancer.
Not necessarily, I had the same problem with my enhancer. I hooked it up exactly as the directions said and it would ONLY spark the split second I let off the start button causing a backfire. I searched everywhere and ended up getting a new set of directions from MSD. There was one wire difference in the two directions (I have no explanation for this) I hooked it per the second set I got and it runs perfect. I wish I could tell you which wire to check but this was last winter and for the life of me I cant remember. I would recommend doing a little research before ruling out a fault unit, it could save you a couple bucks.

It would have been whichever wires come from the ignition pickup.

it fires when you let off, since voltage is dropped to the CDI, the same as the pickup signal sort of.

you could have issues inside your stator too, but the ONE enhancer that went bad on me acted like that.

and ive since read of other folks having the same issues.

I guess I should back up here, and ask, is that a KNOWN good enhancer?

try it in another boat.

the enhancer is unknown. I replaced the stator with a good one (no fraid wires, and ohms all checked out). I hooked it up as msd said to on there website. I couldnt see how you would change any wires around. tomorrow I am going to hook up the stock cdi and see if it does anything different. I wish I had a second SJ to try it in. I know when I pull the plugs and check for spark, as long as the green button is pushed, there is spark coming from the plugs.

I know one of the wires is a male and the other if a female, that way it is harder to connect them wrong. Without a wire diagram in front of me I dont know what the 2 wires do to see if it would cause a timing issue.

maybe your 180degrees out of phase on your flywheel install. Check your alignment, and set it no more than 2 degrees advance

The MSD Enhancers can be used on 62T,61X and 6M6 stators, the differrance in the install is... MSD did not color code the wire to go to the stator wire. This wire is white/W red tracer on OEM Yamaha, MSD made it only white and used a male plug end on the CDI side. If you use this CDI on a 62T late style stator you have to use a female to female jumper from stator to MSD cdi. When using MSD cdi on pre-62T use male plug from cdi WITHOUT jumper wire and plug straight into stator male white/ W red tracer wire. The MSD white female ALWAYS plugs into the white male wire going out the elec. box to the Start/Stop switch.
Always check to see if wire correctly before jumping back to the stock OEM cdi as it will have the right wire plug ends on them for the correct year model stator.

I put the stock CDI in, but Im not sure if it was good or not. It was out of a stock 650 that was set aside because it didnt run, but I dont know why it didnt run. Anyway, It still backfired with the stock CDI. So I guess my next questions are can a 61x (WR700) stator work with a 6m6 engine? And what else do you think? BTW the stop switch has been disconnected, and I did remove the flywheel cover, but not the flywheel yet. How often do the stock CDI's go bad and can they cause the same problem when they do go bad?
