SXR SXR pump question (probably a dumb one)

I understand you are supposed to fill the inside of the pump cone with grease?... This might be a dumb question, but why?

Keep in mind Ive never taken a jet ski pump out so Im not 100% how its put together

1st, no question is a dumb question. That's what these board are for. You want to use grease. Any grease rated for marine use will work. The guys that use oil do it because they pop the seals out of the sealed bearings, turning them into a regular roller bearing set up. There are pros and cons to this. For 99% of applications, the oem standard way is fine. Also don't fill the cap completely full, because you will hydraulic the cap(no where for the air to escape to) when you try and put it on.

So how full do you want to fill it? Is there a certain amount in oz? Or does it depend on the size of cone you have on? I plan on putting the TBM pump stuffer on with the stubby freestyle cone.

Also how is the grease suppose to lube the bearings if it is all in the tip of the cone? Is it going to ooze out of the cone and get on the bearings or do the bearings sit close to the cone?

Thanks Ultimate1, you always answer my threads and help me out - I appreciate it!!

It doesn't grease the bearings the only grease you need is to put on the oring to seal the cone from water getting in.

Grease is not needed. I've never taken apart a factory one and had much of any grease in there at all. A lot of people like them full of grease cause if its full of grease, it can't be full of water. The grease serves no other purpose since the bearings are internally greased.

That makes more sense than anything, So Im drawing a conclusion that I should use some greaseto seal the cone but its only purpose is to keep water out, not to lube anything

Every one that ive taken off has had grease in it, even brand new skis, if the factory fills it with grease you should too.

Yes, the grease is only there to keep water out. So realistically 1/2 to 3/4 full is plenty. It is more important to make sure the cone o ring seals correctly, especially if you are putting the aftermarket pump cone on, as the TBM cones are more precise and a tight fit.
