Custom/Hybrid The Wonders of Nikasil and TPE

First off, this is not the proverbial TPE 964 engine...
Erik, Mr. TPE himself, built this Polaris based, 950cc engine in 2012 for me, about 6 months before the 964s began hitting the water, it I remember right.
Well after two years of hard riding in salt water, I decided she was due for some preventive maintenance. Engine had no issues, compression was exactly 165 in both cylinders, and I believe compression when it was new was 165 or 170psi. I was having nightmares of a wrist pin bearing failing and destroying my baby though, so I bought new bearings, pins, rings, and base gaskets for her.
Pictures tend to speak for themselves, but just want to point out that these nikasil bores look perfect. Cross hatching is still very visible and the walls are perfectly smooth- no gouges. Nikasil on these cylinders was done at Millennium, same place Erik uses now, following his porting of them.
So basically, this thread is just to say how happy I am with Erik's work and to show his ability to do custom work that lasts!
Oh, and I'm a believer in Amsoil- bottom end was immaculate and wrist pin and bearing showed no wear!

By chance did you look at if say after 5ish hours? Did the rub become pregressive over 2years time or is that how the rings just ended up seating after heat cycles?

Rub? Not sure what you're talking about.
I am ordering new pistons right now because mine are at the edge of usable clearance, but that's still cheaper than a bore and new pistons.
And for what it's worth, The Crank Shop in Vermont has been great for replacement parts, which is where the cylinders, pistons, and valves came from. The lady who answers the phone to take orders knows what's going on!

Well when I took the engine apart, it had 165 psi per cylinder. New rings, pistons, bearings, and wrist pin in there and broken in after a tank of fuel or so and compression is dead even 165 psi again!
Maybe this winter I'll get the head machined a little to bump that compression some...!
