Thoughts on what to buy

I have been saving up for a rn sj and now it's time. I have two options first one is buy a friends 99 sj never seen salt water has the orig battery from when it left dealer ship basicaly sat whole life all stock or buy 96 rn with b pipe prop milled head shorten pole exc the hull is super clean also. It was never barell rolled exc just surfed. I plan on riding the surf 99% of the time. They are both about same price under 3500. The one with the pipe sounds great due to the pipe and parts, but a stock ski sounds great also. Funds are tight but I need a ski

Definitely the 96 with the mods! Your just going to add those parts later on anyway. Believe me your saving money in the long run. I bought my 03 that only had a prop, intake grate, and ride plate. Now I have head, b pipe, msd, reeds, rrp steering, etc etc If you want to ride primarily surf, like myself, then that is even more of a reason to buy the one with the mods already on it. You didnt't mention if it has footholds installed but you'll definitely need those. The extra power really comes in handy when coming off a wave or even "picking you up" if your about to fall over. Your also going to want to reinforce the hulll for surf. Ask me how I know lol.
A guy I just met with a 2014 RN went riding with our group and had no knowledge of freeride or modding and is now kicking himself for dropping 9k on a stock one when he should have bought used with parts already on

modded ski for sure I bought a rn that had steering footholds intake grate and scupper but otherwise stock under the hood. now about 2k later im wishing I would have waited and bought a machine that already had pipe head prop etc.

I also hear the 96 hulls are stronger. My friend has a mint 96 ski that has been extremely reliable even if it is over 15 years old. Like everyone said, you'll end up putting all the mods on yourself so i'd defo go with the modded ski. Don't forget about hoodstraps, pole limiters etc.....these things all add up.
