TPE 964 and ET 967

Hey guys so before I pull the trigger on a new motor I have a few questions about the motors listed in the subject. I ride a pond/ lake that is about 7-8 miles with my buddy’s. Right now I’m running a JM718 motor with a factory b pipe and Solas 148 pump in my aqaubot v2. Looking to stay with a stock stroke motor that’s reliable, I’ll be keeping my factory b pipe so I can run my 5 gallon tank and stuff. I’ll be running an msd enhancer and stock electronics with a lightened flywheel so I know I won’t get the full potential out of these motors unless I switch to the laydown pipe and stuff. My question is I run about 75 hours a season give or take, are these motor reliable or require a lot of tinkering/ rebuilding? I’m just trying to have the most fun freestyle wise with a reliable set up and small wakes. Thanks in advance

Theres a big difference in the 781bb vs the 718 especially if you add a lay down pipe and big carbs. The 781 will flip on its own wake in a carbon hull. Lucas did multiple flips back to back off my superfreak -4.3 with my 781.

Yeah I have a lot to learn but I want to be able to push my limits and have the power when needed/wanted. I’m running a glass Aqaubot v2 with a 148 mag pump and factory b pipe with the stock 38s.. what’s a 781 with carbs running from you guys? I have my 718 motor in damn good shape I could send you to rework that if easier

Jm may know but my buddy @chasemussetti ordered mine for me maybe he will chime in on it. I love mine. It works great. I even lightened the flywheel. Im running it as a charging set up. Chase is running his a TL.

FYI, you cant compare any Super Stock setup using a OEM cyl by anybody, compared the the abilities of the TPE Platform. the OP was originally asking about the current class of 964/967. He stated he is running a JM 718.
Just going to a BB platform is not in the same league as these 964 motors. While it is a step up, your completely side stepping the question.

To answer your question, its common place that a well maintained 964/967 motor using a quality OEM crank ( not SBT, Hotrods, or any aftermarket rebuild) can see 500-600 gallons of fuel run before any maint teardown

Yes I was looking for reliability wise out of them as I’d like them to last more than a season if maint. Properly. I originally wanted to run the ET 967 with 46s for now with a lightened flywheel and factory pipe alone with msd(I know this will limit potential). Then down the road graduate to electronics and a laydown pipe. I just want more out of my ski to get started

Mostly comes down to skill. Having a good pump will make a huge difference as well. Something 148+ or an OEM 155.

Yeah I know it’s got a lot to do with skill. It’s just about the off season for us so I’m doing research and asking questions now so I can start the search on another motor and parts I’ll be needing

If you are going to run 46's and a new intake on your new engine. It would be worth buying that first and running them on your current engine. Can pick up 46's on amazon around 210$ each.

I’d second the 781 for reliable power. I’d say get a 781 and get all the goodies. Learn to flip that. When you upgrade to a huge PV motor you will actually be able to use it. I just went through this. Took a lot of practice, but I learned to flip my 781 with ease in a carbon havoc. Here my thread about the 781 http://x-h2o.com/index.php?threads/jetmaniac-blue-781-backflip-capable.196137/ videos in that thread were before I learned a faster setup wake. I could overrotate most flips with the 781.

My setup details are in that thread. I’m now running a PHP 1015 and cant land flips cause I’m over rotating haha (a good problem to have)

To speak to your original question a bit, I’ve ridden a TPE 964 a guy is running locally and it freekin rips, but I’d just be cautious since TPE technically isn’t in business anymore (was sold to DASA and I think plans are still up in the air)

The 38's had to be holding that engine way back? Did you try it with larger carbs at some point?

Thank you ! How long have you had that motor ?

The et967 does not compare to a 964 in performance. The 967 (falsely named to sucker you in) does not pull the pitch that a 964 can. 964s should get 100 hrs. and then rebuild if you don't suck in water through the rear cylinder but thats water control in the hull. I've had some get 200 hrs. but I wouldn't recommend this as your asking the crank to handle so much power for too long. Dasa supplies pistons and such at this point and I'm working with them to get them to put out cylinders and engines. Parts are still available and will be. The 964 was not designed to be a cheap engine but the best stock stroke period. Et is just designed to be good enough to sell, as his business model is copy off close enough to confuse you, then lower the price so you think your getting something the same, its not. I can go into why a 964 will last as longer but thats a long phone call.

I’m a fan of the ET967. Ive been around a handful of them locally throughout the years and they have been very reliable engines, a few with well over 200 hours on them from new. I have video of one we setup personally, 6 trick combo. That motor was beat, been through three owners. One of the first 967’s, it’s in Canada now
