Freestyle Tricks for a beginner to start working on

Hey all, Im a newbie to the sport and would like to start learning some tricks. I've had the ski for two short colorado seasons and have just finally gotten the hang of jumping a little bit (less than a foot consistently, maybe a little over a foot when im lucky lol) if i use a wake or a small roller but cant jump on totally flat water, so thats where I'm at. I can also do a power slide (not sure if thats the ccorrect term but its the equivalent of the skateboarding trick), but thats pretty lame too. What would you suggest i start working on next? I'd like to set some goals for next summer. lets say i wanted to master 5 new tricks, what should they be? any instructionals would be awesome too. Thanks guys!

First couple I learned are the basics. Sub, fountain, tailstand, rodeo (sitting on the hood), nose stab. These are good starters to get good at, and from there you can branch off to more technical tricks like the barrel roll or monkey jump.

get the 180 down then 360, sub, pogo, water hose... things that dont require getting off the water. then get you bunny hops down (bigger the better). then hit some waves get comfortable with hight then 180 nose stabs, barrel rolls, backflips,

I believe he would have to learn to do bunny hops before he subs... and i would recommend not trying to sub without a pole limit strap... This was my first season on a SJ, and i broke my pole mid summer... could have been avoided with a limit strap.... But if you dont have a limit strap, and you go to do a sub, if you dont tuck on entry, and you feel like the pole is coming up, BAIL. I would rather look-a-fool that break my pole...

And sorry, but what is a bulldog sub??

it was a little differnt for me when i first put it on... when it is brand new, the bungee is just adding a little extra downward pull on the pole so it feels heavier... I ride with my limit strap all the time... i now have an aluminium pole, and will still ride with it, just so i do not snap my pole bracket one day... sorry, my ski is torn apart for paint right now, and i do not have any good pics of the limit strap on my ski. just google, blowsion pole limiting strap... (it is cheaper than a new pole)

thats a good tip. I currently only ride surf stance.

Learn to ride switch. You probably favor your left foot forward (regular) or right foot forward (goofy). Learn to ride switch (the opposite of your normal stance).

Riding only one way reduces your ability to set up in certain conditions, will make you suck at racing if you ever decide to do that (Racing stance is the same as surf stance but you switch every corner), and can create muscle imbalances that really suck. Always twisting left and never right creates a favoritism that alters your posture, and over time, will cause pain.

Be ambidextrous.

Very interesting advice right thurrr ^^^^

I'm surprised nobody has addressed this yet, but what are you riding?
Does it have foot holds or foot straps? If not, one or the other would be helpful.

The limiting strap/ Rope is pretty key. But it goes back to what you're riding.

Also, do you have a bilge?

Depending on your answers above, this would be the list of things I would suggest. Also check out the trick section for some instructions.
If you're having trouble, post up and i'm sure one of us can sort you out.

Your 1st tricks are the easiest ones...

Sub (Jump, land driving the nose under)
Turn sub (No jump, just turn and drive the nose under)
Powerslide/surface 180 or w/e the name is
Aerial 180 (Jump, turn 180 in air)
Nose stab (Aerial 180 to sub)
Fountain (be on hood, puts the pump in the air)
rodeo/hood ride
rodeo/hood ride 180 (surface 180 while riding on the hood)
Rodeo 180 to fountain
Log roll (turn 90*, roll the ski and come up on the other side)
Down Parascope (Stand on gunwhales, drive ski under water so only the pole is out of the water)

The only inversion is the nose stab which is a partial inversion. All of these tricks can be done w/o mods but you would be foolish to do any variation of a sub w/o a bilge.

Most of these tricks can be done both directions, so practice and master them turning left and right. Work on increasing the duration of your subs until you and the ski can both be under the water for 1-2 seconds. Increase fluidity and make them look clean. Work on new tricks when you can control these smoothly and have the budget to upgrade. You can flatwater roll a stock SJ but learning how to flatwater roll a stock SJ wont be easy.

do lots of figure eights to get the handling down!
Then you can have your own little wake to jump off of.
