Blaster WB first ride...died after ~15 min

New here...and first post! Researched a good bit, but could find my exact issue. Just purchased a ‘93 Waveblaster (mostly stock) on the cheap...didn’t run but has run this season. Thought it was an electrical issue. Took it out for first time after replacing ALL electrical components in electrical box. Ran for about 10~15 min and died. Noticed strong smell of fuel. When got it out of water, the water that drained from the ski was very dark, dirty and “oily.” More water drainer again when home and even stained driveway. Noticed probably about a quarter of the fuel was gone from tank. Seems excessive for such a short time running. The oil injection system is still installed...NOT deleted (yet...but would prefer to keep). It did run best at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle...bogged badly at WOT. So obviously will need to go through the carb...clean, rebuild, confirm jets/air screws, but that doesn’t explain condition of water that drains. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What are your carb screws set to? Low screw which is towards the rear of the ski is 1 7/8 plus or minus 1/4. The high speed screw is towards the front of the ski and should be 1 5/8 plus or minus a 1/4. What do your spark plugs look like? It sounds like it is running too rich and is dumping oil into your exhaust. You probably fouled your plugs. See if you have a spark. Also the plugs should be br8hs.

fx1mark...thanks for the reply. Both Hi/Lo speed screws are within spec. Spark plugs looked good...little lean if anything (not oily at all). Spark is good...already replaced wires, caps and new BR8HS plugs. Is there anything else that could cause gas &/or oil to get into the exhaust?

I think you answered your own questions. Address any oil injection issues by deleting it. Pre-mix is not the end of the world and dramatically simplifies the ski. Give the carb a good bath in an ultrasonic cleaner and rebuilt with genuine Mikuni parts. Check leak down and compression and get her ripping.

Thanks e46erak...I actually do have a block-off plate already but have been reluctant to install. Mainly out of laziness as I have another 4 stroke ski, and its kind of nice to not have to think about premix. I mean...I haven’t mixed gas since my MX days in the early 2000’s!

If you like oil injection keep it. But don't keep it out of laziness, keep it out of convenience. If you're lazy about it you might not notice a loose or brittle oil line... or oil level. Look after the system and it'll look after you. Another thing is not all 2t oil works with injection, so make sure you check the bottle before you dump it in. Most bean oils for instance are mix only.

Rebuild your carb with genuine parts. Surgically clean! Inspect your choke cable. Mine was binding and the choke was only opening half way. Delete that thing and put a plunger primer in.
