What is the "Thanks" and "Thanked X Times in X Posts" about?

Just wondering what this means? Seems I have seen it on other forums but I have never understood the purpose or reasoning.

That's actually a pretty cool idea. That sure beats the feedback concept.

Is there a quick way to go back and see what we said that was so helpful? Sometimes knowing the context is good feedback as well.

Since the site has been redesigned I noticed in the info under our Avatars there's a Thanks line. So whats the "Thanks" for?
