A year ago I started using biodiesel for solvent in my parts washer. It works good but it is just a bit slower than mineral spirits for heavy buildups. The biodiesel is biodegradable safe enough to drink or so i'm told.
I use biodiesel that I made that didn't quite meet the grade on my quality testing, rather than reprocess it I just throw it in my parts washer when I need to replentish, It costs me less than $1.00/ gallon to make. And it doesn't have that nasty fuel smell.
I was just going to recommend Biodiesel. I work at a Biodiesel plant and I know first hand that it is a good solvent. It is safe to get on your skin (not carsenagenic). When we opened, the news did a story and the reporter stuck his finger in it and licked it off. It does melt rubber and cheap shoes don't last long. It even softens the nitrile coated gloves we get.

As azhayseed mentioned, you can make it yourself, and for $1.00 a gallon, I imagine he must be using free waste veggie oil to do so, a new gallon of veggie or whatever you want costs more than $1.00/gallon, the stuff we use as feed stock is $2.50/gallon, and we buy 3 million gallons at a time.

I do have to argue about the biodegradability though. Yes, it does break down, however one would need to be conscious about where it is disposed of. We have to be careful not to get it into the storm water. As it breaks down, it uses oxygen, which means the fish can't breath. Also, once you clean any petroleum grime from your parts, it's now no longer biodegradable. You could always filter it and dump it into a kerosene or waste oil heater though.

I no longer work at the BioDiesel plant, but I'd still source out some BioDiesel to use in a solvent tank.

Around here, 100% Bio goes for about $3-4 a gallon. Way cheaper than I've been able to find a few gallons of Kerosene for.

At work, we handled it with our bare hands. It's 100% save and not carcinogenic. It is a damn good solvent and doesn't stink like a lot of other stuff.

This wasn't some back-yard Hippy operation, this was the largest BioDiesel plant in the country.

I don't know if you ever see a Safety Kleen http://www.safety-kleen.com/Pages/Default.aspx truck running around or have friends that are mechanics but ask them when they have their parts washers serviced and meet up with the chemical company that services their washers.

But for a twenty the chemical guys will fill up a few gallon containers of parts washer solvent and never hesitate. I always find a service company and throw a $20 to the truck driver there is no telling you you can get. I got an old parts washer that needed a pump and 3 gallons of solvent for $50

I bring my parts to work and use the Dry Ice Blaster.

I have thought about purchasing a parts washer for years now but can't stand the smell of having one in my shop, nor do I like the fire risks they pose. For the few times I absolutely needed one I just use a small tub and any old premix kicking around.

thats what I I do too...no way I'd leave a washer full of gasoline around in the shop...

put some premix in a small tub, wash away....then the gas becomes weed killer

I was always told to use varasol sp? My parts washer came from norther Tool and it is a pile! The paint is all peeling off and I barely got any use out of it...

I used Citrusol for awhile too but even though it's supposed to be natural that orange scent still gets to you after time.
