Super Jet Widening tray questions, Thoughts welcome!

I've been thinking about widening my squarenose tray for quite awhile now but I just can't seem to pull the trigger on it. I have no previous fiberglassing skills, so I'm sure you can imagine that I am a bit freaked out by the idea of cutting my tray wide open. I have a friend that completely ripped out his tray a few years ago and he's yet to finish it and I do not want to be that guy!

Looking for pics that will help me out with the how-to. Finished products, build pictures, etc.

One of my biggest concerns is that I will accidentally cut too deep and end up running into my exhaust tube. My plan is to widen just enough that I refrain from this. Also to cut as effectively as possible so that I only have to de-foam and not re-foam anything in the tray, unless there is wet foam, of course.

Another thought I've had was to just widen the rear half of the tray, or just where the footholds will be. That's where my feet are most of the time anyway. Any thoughts?

So anyone have actual measurements as to how far I'm able to cut in before running into the exhaust tube?

Help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Jared

PS: Does anyone make a widetray kit for a SN? That would probably be the easiest way.

Look into the bob adjustable footholds. The install is pretty straight forward. I think they have a you tube instructional video on doing it too. I did it in my round nose and took my tray to 21" wide.

You can pretty much cut into the sides to widen the tray without fear of cutting ur exhaust. Ur only cutting a 1/4" or so deep enough to get through the fiberglass/SMC and the cavity is full of foam so u'll need to dig that crap out by hand or with a wire wheel on a drill and then u can do the actual fiberglass work. I always used a dremel with a tile cutting bit. a rotozip works nice too. There's several builds with folks who've done this mod. Whether u decide to go with adjustable BOB or Rikter holds or the traditional variety I don't think the fiberglass job should be too overwhelming. It's daunting at first but after u do some reading, get the supplies and really lay it out it's not so bad. The tray widening is a nice mod.

Thanks guys for the responses. Unfortunately I don't have the money to be spending that much on a pair of footholds. I'm going to look into making my own footholds out of foam and glass instead. I'm not sure how I would go about mounting normal molded footholds, like the ones I already bought, to a tray widened all the way to the outer side of the gunwale. It would look really stupid I think if I did that.
