FX-1 Will i like a FX-1?

I've always rode a kawi and I've rode them all except for a sxr Im somewhat of an aggressive rider justwanting some opinions before i buy one

Depends what you want out of it.

I had a 550 that I thought was the bees knees then rode a bunch of fast superjets. Then I bought a bunch of yamahas. I didn't at the time and still don't like how big superjets feel.

The fx1 is basically a 550, but harder to ride and less stable side to side. I wish it had a better hit off the bottom, but I guess that's what an aftermarket hull is for. It's easily a 50-55mph ski with the right mods.

What else do you want to know?

It's an awesome ski, they are a lot of fun. I switched over from a 550 and adapted pretty quickly. They are very unstable but if you have ridden for a while and are pretty decent you should be able to have a lot of fun with it. Just remember its not a very good ski for buoys or anything like that. It is an awesome free ride/freestyle ski though

you might like it if you dont know what good is. the fx1 was advertized as the fastest production standup at 53mph out of the crate. basically a 550 hull with a 701 61x single carb motor with 60hp stock. tiny little pump that does create good thrust at 6200rpm, but delivers disappointing bottom end performance. if you are moving up to the fx1 from a 440/550, then yea, you might like it. if you ever spent any time on a superjet or something even better, no you wont like it. you cant go backwards and be satisfied. everybody i know that has or has ever had an fx1 , either doesnt ride it anymore and rides their superjet or sold it and bought a superjet. its one of the lower rungs on the ladder if you climbing your way towards the top.

The stock pump sux, but the hull is an awesome platform for mods. I'll never understand all the comments about FXs being unstable. If you can ride even halfway decent, it should be very easy to control. They are very stable at speed and carve turns VERY well if you know what you're doing.

Put on a set of tubbies and do a pump mod and you'll have a 80lb, all fiberglass (no smc crap), that hooks up as good as a SJ, and weighs a lot less. They are also incredible in the surf with the right mods.

Unstable huh?

Yea...don't listen to The Buzzard. Like SpecialFX said, Its a great platform for a light, very capacble ski.

Whenever anyone asks me questions like this, i always tell them the same thing. No ski is harder or easier to ride than another. Everyone will eventually adapt to the ski they ride the most.

Note: the above statement has nothing to do with innovation and newer skis being fitted better or a certain style of riding. Its strictly referring to the difficulty level of a hull. Ride it a lot and you will learn it.

Ive ridden plenty of skis and of course im going to say i feel more comfortable on an fx1. only because i have the most tray time in one. I can rip a superjet in the surf too. It doesnt feel any "heavier" or less "flickable". You just have to learn how to "flick" it around. Im getting sick of all this BS about an FX1 being difficult to ride and "unstable". The only reason people say this is because you hate change. its not harder, its just different. Get on one. Learn how to ride it. And you will learn to LOVE it!

KMC- Well said you got that right! I have a 2013 Sj with ada head, factory pipe, lots of mod's. And i just picked up a beautiful mint very well modded and restored Fx1 from my buddy. I can jump between the 2 ski's with 0 problem actually and have a blast on either. Now the Fx1 is easier to flip and go for big stuff on due to being much more nimble and lighter. But when i first road it i def had to learn how the hull wanted to turn but now that i got it down the ski turns pretty well and rides plenty well enough for me to get off a 2013 modded Sj and get on the Fx1 and still have alot of fun! I love mine so far.

And every single ski out there is different. Even Joe Shmoe's Sj vs Billy Bob's Sj will be black vs white depending on year vs mod's ect ect. Just like a Rickter vs Bob vs Freak vs Rok are all way different then one another. Bottom line get what ski you like and put in the hours and learn.

Here is what you need to know:

1. If you like a 550, you will like an FX-1
2. FX-1 needs a 140 or 144 pump upgrade to reach its potential
3. FX-1 is more stable than 550 and less stable than SJ- but not really "unstable". Tubbies probably help this.
4. FX-1 takes more skills and coordination to ride
5. FX-1 is more fun for less money
6. FX-1 is a riders ski, meant to be ridden by people who enjoy riding
7. FX-1 is not a poser ski, there are better skis for riding around in circles going brap, brap, brap, brap, so you can look cool for your internet friends.
8. FX-1 is perfect If you want to go fast for cheap, FX-1 is 47 stock, and 51ish with pipe and prop. A single carb b-pipe 84mm w/144 and I'm at 54mph.

First ski was a 1976 JS440 (awful POS) and then moved to a FX1, the FX was more stable plus it had a lot more (double?) power of the JS, I thought I could never want for more. When I rode a Superjet, I thought they were too wide, too stable vs. my FX. I also have a FX hull that has a ton of mods done to it (pump and intake from SJ, shortened, tubbies, pole bracket moved forward, lowered gunwales etc) that I rode for a season.

I've since moved on to a RN, and now a Backie Chan.

I haven't had the chance recently to ride a stock FX, or one thats stock plus the 144 pump mod. There is a local rider who has a FX thats shortened quite a bit, and I can't express how much I dislike riding it. Is it because I haven't been on a FX in awhile or is it because of the mods? Who knows...

They are fun... In my experience the bond line could be lower, or wider to help a little with stability.
Also, the FX vs. _____ debate is never ending. There are a large group of people who absolutely swear by the FX1, and conversely there are those who can't stand them.

Heres the bottom line IMO, If you love your SXR and hate a 550, than you'll probably dislike the FX1. But, as mentioned above everyone can learn to ride something well.

Coming from a 550 i think he will do nothing but like the Fx1. Like i said above it all depends on the rider and time spent on the ski just like any other. You'll most def like it compared to a 550. And if your out free riding only then you'll def like it also over a 800. I jump between my 2013 Sj and Fx1 every time out and i have no problem with riding such 2 dramatic differance in ski's. It's like in Motocross i jump off a 250f and do a moto on my 450 then swap back.

FX1 is a cool ski. I have very little experience riding them but in my experience the term "instability" comes from the fact that they do not ride flat... You need to have more rider input. If you weight your right foot the ski will lean to the right, if you weight your left foot it will lean to the left. The hull I rode was Idoks F1-Pro with no Tubbies. I felt like a squid but he said I rode it pretty well compared to most people who have tried his ski. I didn't fully understand the things I just mentioned until I stepped off the ski and thought about how it rode. (I only rode it for about 3-4 minutes). Just knowing how responsive this hull is to the riders input (weighting your foot to lean/turn like a motorcycle) makes me think how awesome this hull would be with Tubbies (rather than weighting your foot to lean, you'd now be turning with some good Tubbies on there) and proves to me how easily the NJ guys can shred surf while riding one handed... A lot of input is done with their positioning and weighting their feet etc. I love my Superfreak but i still want to build an FX... Especially for small crappy surf conditions!

I started with a 550 and quickly jumped to a FX1 and love it.
I got a chance to ride a 1100cc RN superjet and it felt great power wise but horrible handling wise. I felt like i was standing on a boat. A boat with a ton of power, but a boat none the less.
If you are built on the smaller side I would definitely go with a fx, for a bigger guy a SJ might be the way to go.

Claiming that either is "better" is naive unless you are taking all of the possible factors into consideration. Both have lots of potential and can easily be tailored to fit what you like
