Custom/Hybrid Wireless Tether -- Source Innovations "Teth-Air"

When in doubt, Throttle-out.
I stumbled upon this wireless tether from Source Innovations. They claimed to have released this product in the fall of 2009.

From the site:

Model CT-10 Cordless Teth-Air, Patent License US 7,034,696 B2

Utilizing the latest long range RFID (radio frequency Identification) technology, the Cordless Teth-Air is the latest safety innovation in the sport of snowmobiling.

The CT-10 Cordless Teth-Air is a wireless tether system providing a modern alternative to the cord type kill switch tether found on many snowmobiles on the market. The Cordless Teth-Air can easily be installed on all brands of snowmobiles that utilize electronic ignition.

How it works: The CT-10 consists of 2 parts, the first is a small 2.45 GHz. transmitter tag that is worn on the wrist of the rider. The second is the control unit that is mounted on the handle bar riser or under the hood. Within 1 second of starting the engine, if the transmitter signal is not present, the engine will be shut down. If during a ride, the rider falls off or for other reasons is separated from the machine, the engine will also shut off in approx. 1 second.

Installation: The CT-10 control unit requires an electrical power source from the snowmobile, and is compatible with battery or non-battery electrical systems. The 5 Ampere load output relay provides the option for normally open and normally closed (parallel or series) connections to your existing kill switch wiring. The installation does not disable your existing kill switch, ignition key, DESS system or corded tether.

Set-up: The CT-10 can be set to read 1-6 tags which allows for all in your group to move from machine to machine or if only 1 tag is registered, there is no chance that your machine will inadvertently be kept running when passing another person wearing a tag.

-->Effective range: 1 to 10 metres ( 3-30 ft.), antenna length dependant, with 1 second delay.
-->User interface 1: Pushbutton on control unit for tag registration and system by-pass function.
-->User interface 2: Dual colour LED on control unit, green flash for tag receive and red flash for low tag battery.
-->Tag Battery: 6 months on popular CR2032 button cell.
-->Enclosures: Water resistant construction for both tag and control unit.

I am considering trying this out on my superjet. It would be really nice to be able to throw my Superjet around on flat water without worrying I am going to snag my tether and kill the engine...

Effective Cost for entire system: $300.00 with one Tether 'Tag' ($65.00 for every consecutive tether tag)

Let me know what you guys think...

Great idea! I do a lot of throws, monkey jumps, etc. that you can't wear a tether while doing. Also, everyone has a some point accidently disconnected their tether while riding. This would be awesome.
The down side for me is how much does it weigh? How does it perform in a wet environment (esp. salt water)? I wish it cost about 1/2 as much.

This is what Chris from Source Innovations sent back to me: :Banane36:

We have an employee that loves the Teth-Air on his stand-up watercraft. The signal is lost as soon as the transmitter is submerged. The downside is the transmitter is water resistant and not water proof so a bead of silicon sealant is required around the battery cover and screws. This has worked out well. The receiver is supposed to be waterproof to 1 metre depth but we have seen one with traces of water in it so we recommend that a smear of silicon also be put over the light pipe insert that is the tiny window to see into the LED light. Use clear and you will still see the light from it.

Power/ground and a parrel connection to the kill switch is all that is required. Sealing the connections is also necessary so soldering and liquid electrical tape is best.

on sale for $199 if you are interested.

So cheaper still, but I sent back questioning the 'water-submerged signal shut-off." Figured since we are constantly submerged this would definitely not help our cause.

If submerging it is enough to snuff the signal, does that mean it has to be mounted external to the engine bay?

I wonder if you could get in touch with the guy who has one installed on a standup and get some pictures or even better, a little writeup about the install and usage.

Blaster 800 has one he designed himself on his Blaster. Not sure where he is with it or if he is planning on selling it. It does work great.

Thanks DJ . I might make some xtra sets in the future Mine is waterproof and still going strong '' 3 years straight '' ,The best use for these is in the surf when you have a head high or bigger wave barreling down on you and no time to put a lanyard in ,so you EAT one more wave LOL, with mine I never eat an xtra wave ... I just get going . I think I could do a longer warranty, and mine wont quit under water . But as you guys know ''I work slow '' !.........

Frank, isn't yours the glove is the tether? As long as you have the glove close to the bars, it runs? I'm sure you could sell a bunch to surf riders.

Count me in I will buy one! I like my idle up and hate lanyards. its a bad combo... Blster 800 Let me know when they are ready!

Ski would cut out when nosing in flips, stabs rolls etc. that's if the delay is 1sec or less. I like the idea and was working on a wireless tether myself but that aspect turned me away, my prototype didn't look anything near as finished as that but worked the same.. For me a pressure on the grips switch or something would be a better system to get out of trouble in the surf.
