worn midshaft

i have a midshaft thats in good shape, 'cept for where the seals contact it.

would it be crazy to put the shaft through the carrier, but just a c-hair from being where it needs to be to let the new seals ride on a fresh surface?

speedy sleeves maybe?
is the shaft toast?

Just ride
if you do that it might put it to far forward or to far backward from where the coupler needs to slide inside the other coupler. i would bite the bullet and find or buy a new shaft.

Yes that will work fine, But do it this way...just use an extra coupler washer on the midshaft and that will let you press it in a tad more and be able to run on the new seal area and will also give you more engagement on the driveshaft spline too!

chucky, are you saying to press the shaft into the housing further than normal? (as in, toward the rear of the ski?)

i was thinking less. but what youre saying makes sense. use a washer to compensate for the diff at the couplers.

is that right?

You can also switch to all double-lip seals so you'll have at least one seal on good material.

good call, darin! id imagine that wouldnt be a dealer item. id probably have to hunt those down at a bearing/seal joint.

I would never buy them at a dealer anyway, you can get better seals for cheaper at an industrial bearing supply place. I just did mine before Daytona and went with double-lip on all 3. Mine is the original '96 intermediate shaft so it has some pronounced valleys but the double lips should help.

It's always better to have 2 lips with a tight seal on the shaft IMO. :sgrin:
