just talked to a buddy of mine and hes been working at a shop that makes uav surveillance planes. he does carbon layup, the real deal, and we started looking at my ski. i remember seeing peoples handpoles that were wrapped in carbon but i never really paid much attention to how it was done. looking for some tips and pics.
he also was looking at the rest of the ski seeing what components we could make. im a machinist so i can make aluminum molds very easily, i just need some ideas. thinking nose piece, not sure what else..
if this gets going we may even be able to sell some parts!

go for it brother...looks dope and is tough stuff! just gotta do lots of sanding and relayering of resin to make it purrrty :) If making nose pieces...do at least one layer of strong biax and then carbon on top. Nose pieces take a bigger beating than you would think. If you want more helpful hints for specific parts or areas of the ski I can PM you more details.....heres some pics of current ski

is that a lowered stock hood? and reinforced handpole? when doing the hand pole you wrap both ends over the brackets? how far? you make a mold for that nose peice? i was thinking something non lowered but w/o the snake eyes. dunno how it would look tho. not sure if im ready for lowered stuff yet.
any other ideas??
thanks alot!

hood is a stocker cut down, tons of reinforcing, and new baffle setup and new latch system. Handlepole was gutted, reinforced, and cut 4.5" then refoamed with a 2.5" tube for intake opening at steering area. for the nosepeice....you can either shape one by hand with sheet metal and keep it for a mold or foam fill the stocker nose and use the foam as a mold for the new nose peice.
Oh and id suggest taking off the top and bottom aluminum caps on the pole before you wrap it so you can gain more strength in the setup.

As nice as that looks I don't see how it reinforces the aluminum base of the pole which is what usually blows apart. At least on 2 of mine.

I'll try to get Brian to post some pics of his. He wrapped the entire aluminum base......rivets and all...then sanded and painted it. It almost looks aftermarket and it is super beefy.

PM him. Surfer-RC51.

damn you got heaps of work in that hull! very impressive and scary prospect w/o a backup ski!
i was thinking of milling out a mold in a block of aluminum, polished up 4ra or better! ill keep those in mind tho, a kellaring program would take a day or so to cut.
how did you fit the wrapped pole back in the braket? i had a hellova time putting the pole back in after i just shortened it.
have any pics of it finished or is that your current?

nice garage bty!

Not sure what u meant by this but I've looked everywhere for a nose piece that blends (no snake eyes) that fits the stock hood. No one makes one that I know of, so I'm attempting to make one of my own. Here's were I'm at

its got tubbies 1 under the carbon. yes i got plenty of backup skis:) not much work once you know what you are doing and have the right stuff around for the job. i took down the fiberglass on the pole a little bit before the carbon wrap. also has a layer of 17oz inside...so it should be pretty solid.
That nose looks great! should look excellent when done. Hotproducts sells one identical without the snake eyes, but for the cost you'd be crazy not to make your own and have some fun while your at it!

I have never worked with carbon before, I was going to do some this winter. Is it that much different than working with glass?

nope just be more careful with it because it seperates a bit and you gotta lay it down real even if you arnt gonna paint over it..
