Other Yamaha jet drive

Tons of experience with other 2 stroke jet drives. Basically one Co. makes ALL jet out board lower units. You can adapt any outboard to a jet lower unit. Keep in mind to loose about 40% of your efficiency . I have a 50 /35 ..... Meaning 50 horse power head puts out the same thrust as a 35 (on a good day) actually labeled from Johnson as a 35. They are loud as He double hockey sticks and drink s gas like a top fuel dragster.

Sounds like a hard sell....... Until you run up a river in 4 inches of h20 and fish areas that haven't been fished by a white man since the early 1800's

Boat selection is important . Go as wide as you can go for the draft and go as light as you can especially running the small motors. My 50/35 has a weight limit of about 1200 lbs TOTAL .... boat motor people and gear . Your speed falls off after every pound over. A JET tunnel is mandatory IMO .

The jet tunnel gets the intake completely clear ( your not dragging any thing under the boat). If you simply bolt a jet outboard on a river boat with out a tunnel you have to set the intake about 2 inches below the bottom. Your fist run going from a prop to a jet will give you more confidence than a high school freshman after a 6 pack .... Sadly two inches makes HUGE difference in most things ..... YOU WILL be replacing the intake sooner than later.

Go to outboardjets.com tons of info........

I Have some friends that made some jet johns. A 1448 is getting about 36 mph with a stock yam 650. In comparison my loaded 1760 with a 50/35 aluminum river boat gets about 22 with a tail wind...... Add a little prop wear and it won't pull a drunk whore off a toilet seat.

My two cents

there great in shallow waters but yo don't want if your in a heavy weeded area most the time its a pain cleaning out , yo need to get a power head 33% bigger then a regular prop lower end uses

I am currently investigating building a jet Jon. I want to use a 701 and sj pump because I have plenty of spare parts.

I love my jet john. Currently have a 650 sportfish was talking of and am going to eventually put in a 760. It really is the only way to go. I can smoke guys with boats with 90hp jet outboards.

We need a sub-forum for these builds.

Can't decide if I should mount my pump in board or out board meaning on the very rear of the 12' Jon. Easier mount on back less aluminum work. Thoughts?

My guys mounted them flush .... nothing hanging out the back. They basically grafted in SN hulls using 16 pound foam ,glass epoxy and carriage bolts. Its cool that they can use any SJ ride plate or intake to tune a little bit. I'll try to get some pics posted.

I would make it flush if I were you. There are to many ways to break off the nozzle. I ride some rocky rapids on occasion but even at the lake you could bump the pier and break your pump off if it stick far past the boat.
Here are some pics from the early stages of my build last year. Its a pos 14ft.

Also my donor ski was a vxr which is pretty close to square nose parts. The other boat was a wr3 which shares very little. In my opinion the vxr is the best boat building hull. It has short drive shaft and mid shaft compared to most couches. A square nose would make a good build too.

I was wanting to save as much room in the boat as possible. Mounting the pump outboard would do this. Not real worried about breaking the pump. The river I am on is slow and easy to travel. Still debating though on mount. I may be using a wave raider for parts. Sport fish post some pics if you can.
