You can remove the housing all day long with a 12mm socket.

Are you talking about removing the shaft from the housing? You can beat it out with a piece of wood and a hammer. I wouldn't reinstall it that way.

take it to a dealer or machine shop. If you have access to a press they are relatively easy to do. You have to press the shaft out first, then pull the seals to get the snap ring out, press out the bearing, press the new one in until it bottoms out on the bottom snap ring. Replace snap ring and bang in your new seals, and press the shaft back in. I was nervous the first time I did one for fear of damaging it, but it was butter once I did one.

Which way does the shaft come out? Do you hammer on the driveshaft side or the coupler side? Has anyone tried freezing the bearings and heating the housing to reinstall them? I've never pulled one apart....just curious if it's possible.

you push on the end that faces the pump. You cant really heat up the bearings because they are a rubber seal, might get kinda melty at 300 degrees.

Shaft presses out from the back. You can carefully use a rubber mallet both to take apart and reassemble.

If anything, you'd heat up the housing and freeze the bearings. The heat would cause the housing to expand slightly giving you a little more clearance. Then when the housing cools, it squeezes the bearings back in place. I think I have a midshaft for a gp800 that won't fit a SJ. Maybe I can do a test on it.
