Surfriding Backflip cherry popping in Daytona

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I know daytona is notorious for breaking pumps/nozzles, and cracking nose pieces from the shallow depths. My question is if I want to attempt back flips, what do you guys do to determine water depth in unfamiliar areas? Or do you advise not to risk it? Assuming we have waves this weekend lol
Thanks

i was actually wondering the same thing, having never rode in the surf. is it better to bail or to pancake with the ski? Ive been trying to learn Flatwater flips all year and i have never once let go, i always just land upside down. seems like thats a bad idea in surf though?

never bail! I actually did my first flip attempt this past saturday in jupiter beach, landed completely upsidedown with the ski. Didn't hurt at all. Anxious to try it again

Meh, tried to hit the back set today. Wa a decent 3-4ft wave. I think i hit it too late or not fast enough. It ripped me off my ski and I went forward and my ski went backward. I did manage to almost rip the grips off. Luckily we both finished flipping just not together. Tomorrow I'm gonna hit the wave way earlier and Im sure I'll get it around.
