I have done exactly the same thing..I wondered where the water was coming in.. Lift the waterbox and place some hydro turf against the hull and the petrol tank.. Also helpful hint..buy gaskets and remove the bolts from the header pipe to get chamber out don't bother about removing the tank etc

carbs have been rebuilt 3 times and have checked everything so thoroughly its silly. The different butterflies could make a difference then. might put old butterflies on and see if fixes it. Thanks
