I would say it's was gas fuels. Maybe the carb leaking some. Then a good backfire

So when going up in carb size 46 to 49 do you have to lower the jetting most or the time or rise it a litte also. Sorry i know it's a off the wall question

I thought there was some life vest also. They had co2 built into them Something you could mount under the hood and infate if needed. Of course your hood poops off then you are screwed.
