This is a good trick! I've done similar but used as big of a washer as I could fit and some grease instead of the ball bearing.

If I had to commute in LA Traffic on a daily basis I'd be buying a motorcycle and keep the tow rig parked at home till I needed it for something. Might be another option to consider.

If storage space is an issue you could always get a folding trailer. I've seen a few in the past where people put bunks on them.
