Trim down for what!?!?!?

Hey guys, I know this has been covered a lot but im still confused. Help would be much Appreciated. I just got a 09 sj and can NOT stand the steering. I have to do something about this. Can I not just buy a quick steer turn plate and a pre 08 cable? Is the mounting different on the nozzle? I wouldn't imagine it is but am very confused. Someone Inform me here please...

it mounts different up by the turnplate, anything is possible if you got the skills to adapt it, I bought a schmity cable and it does the job just fine, Im a little worried about the longevity of it though...

I realize you are looking for a hardware solution to the steering problem, but here's my take on the +08 SJ steering 'issue': I find that the 2008 and up Superjet steers just fine with the stock system if you treat the ski the way it should be treated, with the handling changes made in that hull (sponsons, setback pump, etc): lean it over like you mean it. I rode a 2013 SJ in Pacific Northwest surf for a bit and found that if it's railed/turned aggressively and leaned over, the steering is very responsive and effective.

just drill another hole closer to the steering nozzle center and that will make it turn farther and faster.

This is exactly what I did and gained a extra 10-15mm throw on the steering nozzle

And it turn sharp but like matt said ride the biatch like it was designed to flippen hard

So drill a new hole on the arm of the steering nozzle closer to the nozzle? Did you drill out the farthest hole on the stock turn plate? There is one on mine but hasn't been drilled to allow the male little ball thing that connects the cable, If I were to do that would It just make it turn faster not increase the amount of how much the nozzle will actually turn?

pull the socket off the ball at the turn plate. pull the cable out as far as it will go. turn the bars until it hits the stop. does the socket stick out farther than the ball? if it does, you can move the ball out a bit farther. if it doesnt, it will yank on the cable before the steering hits the stop and thats a no no. drilling the turn plate hole out will make the nozzle throw farther but doesnt make it a quick steer.

I agree with Matt, I never thought the steering was horrible I just wanted the boat to have a looser feeling. the 08+ ride different than the earlier boats. spend 6 months on it and then figure out what you need to change.

yes drill and tap as close to the nozzle as possible

with regards to the turn plate i use a A/M turn plate in the middle screw hole but i think its further out than stock

just try drill it out and put the cable there but make sure you hit your stop before the cable bottoms or maxes out

mine just misses the stop turning right but i mean like 2mm which is nothing really and works fine

on my steering my nozzle moves as max i think it should before the jet starts to wash out the gap between the reduction and turn nozzle

I appreciate the help guys.. I personally think the stock steering is horrible. I like the way the boat feels and handles and steers..i just don't like the fact that it takes a quarter mile to turn the ski 180 and a slow speed. I couldn't ride it for 6 months like this lol I would have to go back to riding my 650. But thanks guys ima figure something out

You can replace the steering turnplate and cable with pre '08 steering cable and an a/m steering turnplate with quicker ratio steering but you will need to make a bracket to mount the cable 2" further into the pole.

I changed my pole turnplate and cable. I also modded the nozzle so i can adjust the trim and moved the mounting point on the steering nozzle. What a difference!! Ive been riding my ski with that set up for 3 yrs and this past weekend i had the opportunity to ride a '13 stock jet and i handed it right back after 2 minutes. The steering swap is definitely worth it!

2008+ SJ Stock Turn Plate and Steering Nozzle Quick Steer Mod
Tools needed
1. M6 x 1.0 Tap
2. 5mm Drill
3. Dremel Tool & Dremel Cutter I used Dremel high speed cutter #196
4. File to clean up the support rib on the steering nozzle
Step one pop of you chin pad and remove the steering cable and the ball joint. The ball joint on the turn plate and the steering nozzle are both M6 x 1.0 threads.
Step two drill the outside cast hole in the turn plate with the 5mm drill and tap. Apply blue thread lock and reassemble the turn plate ball joint and re-install the steering cable. Turn plate mod done.
Step three remove the ride plate and steering cable. The steering cable nozzle ball joint has a 5mm hex slot in the ball end to remove it from the brass insert pressed into the steering nozzle. Remove the steering nozzle.
Step four use the dremel tool and the file to remove the excess material from the top and bottom rib of the steerng arm from the steering nozzle to allow drilling and taping of the new ball joint mounting hole closer to the centerline of the steering nozzle.
Step five use the washer from the steering nozzle ball joint to mark where the new hole for the ball joint will be drilled. Once marked use the 5mm drill and 6 x1.0 tap to drill & tap the new hole.
Step six re-install the steering nozzle and steering cable using blue thread lock.
Step seven take it for a spin and smile..

Did that, Then sacked up and bought a xmetal pole and blowsion cable and quick steer setup. Things awesome now.. Someone will appreciate that if they come across it ^^

The problem is your cable does not have enough travel on a stock 08+ and you will be ripping the cable instead of hitting the turn stop (block) on the turn plate.

Don't forget to cut the ride plate flush too. I have not tried this but I think if you made a bracket to get the nozzle strait not angled up like the 08+ this would also make a big difference.

I made this mod to my 08+ super jet only because I would be riding it in a large pool and needed it to slide around. Because I am used to it, I can get it to slide right around in stock form. But if there were any rollers (choppy water) I could mess up and not get it to spin. The trick it to let off the throttle to un hook the rear end.

Also I agree, this boat does something great. It Turns! Its better as a ripper, play ski and carving than it will every be as a "free style" ski.
