SXR 08 SXR800- Fuel Tank Neck cracked...is this common?

Was chasing down a fuel related issue on my buddies SXR and come to find out the fuel tank is cracked right on the other side of the fuel filler hose. The tank has never been out, and nobody has ever tightened the clamp besides from factory. Is it common for it to break there? Its cracked about halfway around. Not too sure if it can be fixed at this point..looks like I will have to replace the tank for him. Any recalls or anything on this?

Also, Will the tank come out without removing stuff from the motor?

I highly doubts you can remove the tank without removing some stuff. I actually tried to do that too last week so I can flush out the watery gas but is impossible.

Having just stripped my SXR for rebuild I can tell you the engine needs to come out to get the tank out, there's not even enough space to unbolt the engine from plate and slide back.

Unfortunately the lot has to come out.

Not heard of tank cracking there before?!?

I never have heard of a SXR tank cracking before. However, I get my tank out by unbolting the engine mount plate and sliding it back. You will also need to remove the inspection port cover on the flywheel cover.

Will depend what pipe he is running as to whether there will be enough room to slide it back, also by sliding it back it may allow you access to the tank but if it has to come out I doubt there would be enough room.

Worth a shot though.

I haven't heard of a gas tank cracking but it is a known problem that the fill neck cracks. Might want to check that too.

They crack because the straps get loose and the tank bounces up and down and hits the hull right above it..... I broke the fuel intake that way...

Pull the motor. Takes 12 minutes. You don't even need to remove the pipe.

His straps are like new....actually took some force to undo them.

Thanks for the great info guys. For right now it is epoxied (and holding..suprisingly) until his new tank comes in. Its completely stock...will just pull motor since its not that hard.
