10% Ethanol in the pump gas

When in Oregon we had to buy fuel with 10% ethanol, the boats are lazy off idle but seem to run ok from mid to top. I also noticed a big drop in fuel mileage in my truck, but it could be related to the coast highway as well. How are you guy's dealing with the poor fuel, they did have some 110 race fuel at the Shell for $37/5 gallons. We don't have that issue yet up in Seattle, I will be hauling fuel from here when going that way next time.:shooter3:

That is all they sell in my area as well. You can't find gas that isn't E10 anywhere in the Inland Northwest.
You felt the difference, my RN and X2 both were a bit doggy off idle. It must change the flame front of the burn, and at low rpm it just don't work well.

there really isnt much difference but the one thing ethanol does do is absorb moisture when it sits for a while which is bad .Make sure you use Stabil or Startron in every can of gas .

Our area has been using 10%ethanol for at least a year now, I think it may be a little longer actually. I havent personally noticed a difference in performance with it, but I have noticed that it does not mix well with water. When water hits it, it seems to make some kind of like blackish brownish mush.

ethanol has a lower heat of combustion....so it does not produce as much energy as gas...congress came up with federal mandates that oil companies blend so much each year....I believe next year calls for even more widespread use...this is not a good gas additive...we need to e-mail our lawmakers....

Found this.

Ethanol has a heating value of 76,000 BTU per gallon, which is approximately 30 percent less than gasoline's heating value (which is approximately 109,000 to 119,000 BTU/gal). The result is E-10 gasoline which should yield slightly lower mileage – a decrease of approximately 3 percent. Fuels containing higher levels of ethanol will have a corresponding reduction in mileage. For example, E85 fuels produce mileage approximately 30 percent less than gasoline.

which way did you guys drive in? If you go 26 west (not 99) it is a better, easier drive now and you can hit the tillamook airport for gas. Super easy and 20 minutes from Tierra. Takes me from sylvan (oregon zoo area) bout 1:45 or less to Tierra.

Salem and over, we needed to stop there anyway.

I really don't think that 10% ethanol would be responsible for what you and Greg described.
You might need to change your jetting a tiny bit.

Don't think I will, but if I had to run that all the time yes. It seemed to be only affecting the popoff and low speed just off idle, after swapping out the fuel it seems normal now. I also noticed the fuel smells different, not like the gas we get here. After changing it today, the throttle response is crispy and sounds normal again. I just wonder if you need to jet up or down to compensate, may look into avgas if we run into E10 here.

I am putting my 35cc domes back in and going back to running race gas / pump gas. After riding Crabs ski my ski was a real dog with the same set up, both skis use to be almost identical in preformance.
Compression is fine 178/178 just a dog after putting the 37cc domes in about the sametime we changed to 10% ethanol

Last I checked I only had 165 psi in both with 35cc domes, doubt thats the problem. I run a low pitched prop remember and almost no rev limiter. What reeds?

Stock reeds, 13/18 3mm cut back. Ever since i have been home from Pismo and changed the domes out it seems to be a dog not at all like it use to be.
My solas X prop is about 12/15, and I took out the freestyle cone.

You got a T cylinder, Kevin's got an X cylinder. Different port heights, different cranking compression.

Know that, he is just not happy with the way it runs right now. Personally, I think he should drop down in prop.
