1100 stator

I know the cdi is a DC system, when I bought the ski the owner snipped the charging coil wires off stator so I have charging system, what do the red, purple and yellow wires do off of the stator. Could I just completely remove the stator if they don't do anything and just leave the pick up coil and a ground wire hooked up?? It's basically a cheap way of a total loss system minus the heavy flywheel but would definitely loose a lot of EM drag. Any light would be appreciated right now. Thanks guys

Depends on which CDI you have. If it happens to be from a '99 1100 STX and only from a '99 1100 STX, it will run without the stator as a total-loss system. If you have any other year 1100 STX/ZXi CDI then it needs the exciter coil on the stator to drive the spark. Given that your stator has the purple/red/yellow/black wires, you likely don't have a '99 1100 STX CDI and can't delete the stator.

The "EM drag" you mention, assuming you're talking electromagnetic drag, isn't what makes a total-loss remove engine load. It comes from lightening the flywheel beyond what you can lighten a flywheel with magnets, which are heavy. You can remove only the stator from a setup and run it as a total-loss and not see any appreciable gain in acceleration. It only happens if you also lighten the flywheel or run a lightweight aluminum non-charging flywheel.

In your case, I would recommend having your stock flywheel lightened. It removes mass from the outer perimeter where it counts most, while retaining the magnets for charging and ignition.

Your current stator will work. You only need to wire up the charge coil (brown wires) if you want to keep the charging system, trigger pickup (blue and green) and ground wire (black). The only difference on the "digital" model stators is that they don't have the exciter coil windings since the '99 STX 1100 CDI uses the battery for spark rather than the stator coils.

If you want to run it as total-loss, keep the trigger pickup and remove the stator. Keep the extra ground wire as well.
