SXR 1100 sxr donor ski questions

Usually over on pwctoday, but I'm getting sick of the BS over there. Anyways, I am wanting to do an 1100 SXR in the near future. I have located a donor ski, a '98 Kawasaki 1100 ZXI. Found it on craigslist, thought I was going to be dealing with a normal craigslist seller, but the guy seems to have great knowledge about the ski. So here's the deal, the original top end just went out on the original motor, seller said one of the cylinders ran to hot and locked the motor up. He removed the top end and the bottom was not hurt. Basically what I would be getting is...the complete bottom end(flywheel, stator, starter), ebox/cdi, all the manifolds, stock exhaust, cylinders(which are bore able) and an aftermarket head. I've seen running 1100's go on ebay for 1k +, so I figured top end will cost $450-500 +, so I offered $400 cash for everything he had, but I havent seen any pics yet, just an hour phone call about the motor. He told me to come take a look at it and we'll go from there.

So do you think thats a decent price to pay for what I would be getting? Or should I hold out for something better? I have no problem replacing the top end either.

More importantly what parts are a necessity on these swaps? I know I need the ebox, and I'll need a driveshaft from an STX, but is there anything else I should try to grab from this guy that I'll need down the road?

Any responses will help! Thanks

I think that is a good price. Depending on wether or not people know what they have I have seen them go for anywhere from 2500, all the way down to about what you are looking at paying. Just make sure the rest of the ski looks clean, as these are common to have rusted out elec. boxes. Once you do the conversion, you won't be dissapointed. It all depends on how far you want to mod the motor. The 98 has cv carbs, so anything other than stock you will need different carbs. These motors respond well to minor mods such as raising the compression, and drying out the stock pipe. Also jet ski solutions makes a helluva nice conversion elec box if you don't mod the oem one to fit in your ski. Kommander makes the kit to route the exhaust and it works welll. You can also drill the baffle in the sxr waterbox to get some more power. Also there are options for advancing the timing. You will use your stx driveshaft and there are different ways to do the motor mounts and bedplate. It's all up to you, but that's what makes the build fun!! Let me know if you have any more questions, I'd be glad to help.

im building one as well
i picked my zxi up for 400 with a elect prob that was just the key switch
there is alot of good info on pwct but you have to ask @ the correct time or noone will answer you
i got frustrated as well
there is a guy named trip who is mfg conv parts like e box bracket and batt box and custom manifolds
best of luck

400-450 is a very good deal for a complete motor, even it it needs a rebuild. Just check to make sure the crank is in good shape. Kawi 1100s sometimes oval
out the piston rod ends. Also, check to make sure the cylinders don't have cracks in the sleeves as Kawi cylinders are a pain in the a$$ to resleeve.

There are tons of inexpensive mods to make the 1100 conversion go. And, the 1100 motor really wakes up with simple bolt ons and adjustments.

Good luck. We have two 1100SXRs and an 1100 Blaster one and they are a ton of fun, especially since you don't need expensive race fuel to go fast.

what year zxi's can be used for this conversion and which years don't have the cv carbs?
thanks

what do you guys mean by "CV Carbs"?

Scottie- other than the ovaling out on the piston rods, is there anything else the 1100's are known for going bad motor wise?

CV carbs are "constant velocity" which Kehien makes on the 98 and up 1100.
96-97 had standard Kehien carbs that are easier to turn

As for prop it all depends on what pump your using

well this isn't going to be a project that will happen for a while. I just want to start gathering info and parts on the necessities of the build. So far I've located a donor motor, going to look at it tomorrow night. My ski is a stock lites class with minor mods done to it that are still legal in that class, so I'm just running a re pitched and cut back stock prop. WHat pumps are used in this? Obviously something a lot bigger than mine

i like this thread. have dead zxi in the back, and i'm a die hard, bleed green kawi nut. my problem is i'm not mechanically inclined, so i'm subscribing and hoping you put pix up.

rizk,

The 1100 SXR conversion is a very easy build. About the only really technical thing is setting up the waterbox (and there are people who offer this service) and the drilling and tapping of the motor mounts. Everything else is fairly straight forward.

As for the pump, if you are going to use a stocker, it all depends on the amount of mods you do to the motor. But, a good starting point is somewhere around a 16/24 or so.

Good luck,
Scottie

thanx scottie. i think the first order of business would be to yank that zxi motor out and figure out whats wrong with it. the guy that left it here said it had an electrical problem, that was two years ago! in regards to the waterbox mod, is that a sxr r water box or do i need the one out of thezxi?

Ok so I am driving down to Louisville tomorrow to hopefully pick this motor up. I'll attach pics.

The guy has everything from his old 1100zxi, besides the hull left. Is there anything I should just grab that I'll need for the build? So far, I'm getting complete bottom end, stator, flywheel, starter, exhaust, some hi comp head, stock bore cylinders.

he said the crank has a little surface rust but was easily wiped off and that it turns smoothly. Kind of worries me that the bearings could be rusted as well...let me know what you think, basically I think I can get all that is pictured plus a few other things I can be in this for $150, he wants gold for his cdi however...

Good price for what is pictured there. Looks like the guy followed James Crone's mod book on that one. It has a mildly ported cyl and cleaned up intake man. I also spotted an extra pulse fitting in the cases, so he may have had bigger a/m carbs on it. It's up to you wether or not to rebuild the crank, but I would. Reseal the motor with the fresh crank and put pistons in it and you got a solid motor. If you send a pic of the other side of the intake of the cases we could see if he did some clean up there too. If not you could do it if you tear it down. I would buy it if I was you.

Absolutely. Again, this depends on how far you want to mod and your build budget. There are a lot of 96 non cv carbs on fleaybay right now that you could pick up cheap. However these motors respond very well to a set of standard 44 or 46 mikunis. I believe Scottie Mac has some good jetting specs that would help you dial it in.

photo-55.JPGphoto-52.JPGphoto-49.JPGphoto-48.JPGphoto-47.JPGphoto-46.JPGok here we go this is my foundation. The bottom end was all surface rust, bearings look good, and there is no play in the rods so they are good as well, turns over exceptionally well. The cylinders will be bored by a local machine shop, these are stock bore size cylinders so I'll probably go the next size over(which would be???) Intake manifold has been bored or grinded out a little bit, supposedly there is porting on the cylinders according to ULtimate1, the head has interchangeable domes, but is missing the top piece. Everything you see pictured ran me $150 and 4 hours of my day not a bad start ehhh fellas????
