160 maxx pump

Brand new 160 maxx mag pump, with a 160 skat impeller. The pump has been bored to fit the impeller, but when i tighten the impeller down ti doesnt want to spin freely. I have tried 1 and 2 shim washers with the same results, anyone else run into this?

Why didnt you get the impeller machined to the pump?
Maybe your impeller has be re pitched and made the blades a bit uneven, making some of them snag.

Had an assembled pump & shaft go thru the packaging during shipping, shaft hit something hard. Anyways the pump stopped spinning, prop blade to pump bore was at least .003 yet still would not spin. Visually Inspecting further I found the hub of the prop apparently sitting on the pump stator veins. So I pulled the pump cone off and pressed the shaft back out if the pump slightly and it released the tension.. spinning ok now.. the shaft was into deep from getting bumped in shipping..

You can pull the pump cone off and hit the shaft with a fat brass punch and hammer a few times & see if it helps.

im thinking the boring wasnt done correctly, its a tight fit all the way down, my skat 144 mag pump defiantly wasn't this tight

I used a flash light first to visually see the prop to stator clearance, saw light all the way around. Then used a feel Ler gauge to verify what I saw.. have you tried either of these methods ?

Just to confirm, with prop off shaft spins nice and free?

If so and all turns on the way down just locks up at the end you might find the prop has been set back like 5mm and is still touching hub so needs a lot more spacers

But is the prop hub touching the hub of the pump. You will not be bale to see this as it sits inside the prop hub.

If you back the prop off a few turns and it slows it to spin it just needs more spacers.

what was your solution. I have the prop fitted in the pump now, but it doesnt spin as freely as i would like, id assume it will loosen up some when it gets some use

I filed down the blades of the prop just enough to not drag, making sure not to go past the spec in the Yamaha service manual. Recently changed to a solas prop and didn't have any trouble with clearence to wear ring.

i had an issue with the 160 Maxx pump where the edge lip where the impeller goes in was a few thous smaller most likely due to welding. it would not let the prop pass thru. i had to ream the edge open so that the pump could pass thru. then i had to file one of the blades a little and buff out a few spots inside the pump to get it to rotate freely. i just watched the prop and found where it would hit and marked them and adjusted. it didnt take much for it to spin much more smoothly
