I have been looking into purchasing a 1991 650 sx and I was curious what the negatives/positives are on this model and also are parts still available or are they hard to find (discontinued) ?

A 650SX was my first standup, and I think they make a great first ski because they can be found cheap (around $600 for a decent one). You can't beat their fun/$$$$$ IMO.

Replacement OEM and aftermarket parts are easy to find. Kawaskai made that ski for at least 7 years and they made a lot of them. The engine was used in several of the Jetski models.

The 650sx is not a popular ski here. Their engine/pump is modern and your 91 had the best engines. Plenty of parts around but make sure the crank is good before its modified.

Go for a superjet if you want to get serious. In 3 months I have hit the 650sx limit. Too heavy, can't turn, no power, and an extremely heavy handlepole. (63lbs to be exact...)

So far the only discontinued part I know of for these 650's are the little white grommets that snap into the hood. They fit in those rectangular air holes on the sides. As for new aftermarket parts I think they're starting to get scarce. I'm not sure if you can still buy things like aftermarket pipes and ride plates. If so I haven't seen them yet and I've been looking for my ski lol. But you can do a ton of little mods to help wake them up. They are still a heavy and sluggish feeling ski but if you can start mastering stunts with this ski you'll be all that much better on a ski with a bigger engine and more power to weight ratio. Intake grates are still around, pump cones, impellers, aftermarket engine rebuild parts and kits...most of the really important parts are there still.

As mentioned, make sure the crank is good before modding if you plan to...and you most likely will after a month or so of riding. But also make sure to replace the crank seals even before modding, I still have yet to do mine but I know it needs them from how it responds to carb adjustments...it doesn't lol. For the money to fun factor though, you can't go wrong. A SuperJet is how I plan to go next but I stand my ground that it's not worth holding out for a SJ if all you're going to pay is 400-600 for a running ski in decent shape. By the time a SJ in as decent of shape turns up, you'll have enough to get it too and not feel like you've wasted your money on the Kawi. We all started somewhere and for most of us it was the Kawi so join the group lol.

I think I had seen a handpole on a 650sx before that looked like a team bill handpole. Anyone know if they make one or if that one was custom.

I had one. It was a good starter ski. Plenty of aftermarket parts on eBay. I am not on the Yamaha bandwagon yet but if I wanted to go big and dump lots of money into something, it would be a RN SJ. You just won't get much return out of a 650 SX.

The owner can't tell me much about the ski and I know the picture is not the best, but is that a stock pipe?

At the time I took the pic I was just starting to pull the engine. There's a small fitting off the side of the head pipe and there's a large hose going into the the bottom of the rest of it just under the head pipe. That's the stock set-up. I was given a link to a bunch of awesome mods and the exhaust mod I found a long time ago. So I went ahead with it all and now my cooling lines are nothing like the stock set-up. I'll post a link to my build and you can see how I did all the work.

Here's the link to my modding project.

Somewhere between 135 and 150. My last 650SX ran perfectly and it only had 128 across both cylinders. In fact I couldn't kill that ski and I wish I never traded it in towards my sea-couch. If it gets to be around 120 or less though I would consider honing the cylinders at least and a new set of rings providing the bore isn't at it's wear limit. Oh yeah, the compression shouldn't be more than 5% out of balance. If the PTO is running at 110 and the mag is 125 or more than you need to do a full rebuild and bore the cylinders. 5% of 125 is 6.25 so you would be safe if there was 6 or 7 psi difference.

I removed mine but didn't use a plate. I just threaded in two 5/16 stainless bolts instead. I coated the bolts with something like JB cold weld and cranked them in. Just don't tap the holes first because it will push the cuttings into the crankcase. The bolts thread in really snug and easily so I would just do it that way. I've heard the plates don't always work out that well, not sure why but I just did it the way I read it and haven't had a problem yet.

If you have the engine apart, tap the two holes for 1/8" NPT and thread in two pipe plugs with some three bond on them.

If you don't have the engine apart just but thelittle block off plate.

As for the lanyard, just find a face plate from a 750 SS or 650 TS. They are rare anymore used and new they run around 65 bucks! Search on PWCT cause that topic was beat to death.
