1. Please buy this SJ!!! $1000 for ANY SJ is worth it. I have a 701 waiting to be pulled out of a donor ski if you're ever ready for it. I'd be happy to make it a win win for both parties.
2. Since everyone has put their 2¢ in about a 550 vs a SJ, I'll add mine in there too...
About 15 years ago, I bought a 650sx and a 550 at the same time. The 650sx was all set up for racing with a pipe, head, etc. Yes, it was faster than the 550, but I quickly found out I enjoyed jumping waves more than going fast. The 550 became my ski of choice. I also bought another 550. Both were stock and I LOVED THEM!! I liked the challenge, the squirreliness, and most of all, the light weight. I could bunny hop over the 3' buoy in front of my dock at the age of 15.
Oh, the reason I had 2 550s - that was because one was always broke, so I had a backup to ride. Remember this for later in this novel...
Fast forward a bunch of years. I then got a SXR 800. Loved it. Super powerful compared to what I was on. Heavy, but I could launch off of waves and do hood tricks, plus nose stabs. Hood tricks were way more difficult on the 550. Then, I got an FX-1. That was the tits!! Felt like 800 power (Yamaha 760) in a 550 hull. I was in love!! I still love this ski today. Then, I got my Wammer hull (RN carbon/Kevlar hull with 701, bpipe...). That was the best yet, because it was the best low end power, but still lightweight. I landed my first ever backflip with the Wammer 701 between a ski nautique and an Air nautique doing a V wake.
Fast forward 6 more years or so. I've ridden every hull and every engine minus a handful of them in the industry. I own, in my opinion, the best 900 class freestyle ski in the industry. I also own a 701 SN now. There's days I like to ride my freestyle ski, and there's days I like to take the SJ out. But one thing is certain, all the SJs that I've owned and been on, ALWAYS work longer and more consistent than any 550 that I've ever known of. I'd love to take my 550 out, but it's sitting in the bottom of a barn right now collecting dust, because it's too finicky to deal with at the moment. I got the honor of riding Mark Gomez's world finals 550 a couple years ago, and if I could pick ANY ski to have as a 2nd ski to have fun with (after my freestyle Helium), I'd pick his 550. That thing was one of the coolest jetskis I've ever been on!! And incredibly powerful for a 550!
So, my short story ends like this... who the heck cares what jetski you have. (Edit: what "standup jetski" you have). You're going to love it. 99% of the time there's always going to be something better or worse that you can buy or sell. They all have their drawbacks and benefits. But they're all fun and keep you in shape. And, BUY THAT SJ for $1000!!!!!
