Super Jet 1992 Yamaha SJ No Spark

I know you guys get a lot of these but i was wondering specifically about the loss of spark in my case. I had my ski running fine with a small amount of spark until i towed it to the river and then it wouldn't start. checked the spark only to find there was none. One of the coil leads has a hole in it and i previously had electrical box issues before...I was just wondering if i should replace the coil, cdi, or stator first? Which one would cause the decline in spark? Or maybe the kill switch?

Unplug the black/white harness and try to start it to bypass the lanyard kill switch first, easiest thing to start with

Okay. Do you know of a video on how to do that? If that doesn't work what part should I replace first?
Replace your spark plugs, first if you have done so already. Then go into the techfaq on this site, download the service manual, and use a voltmeter to ohm out and test for continuity etc on the appropriate electrical components which will point you hopefully to your smoking gun. ....Unless you just want to spend money, start throwing parts at it. Another easy thing is to cut back the coil slightly at the boot, replace the boots and check spark again.

Yeah I already replaced them and I will be sure to try that as well. I'm in a hurry to get it going so I may just replace the coil and see what it does and if not the cdi.

You wont be spending needless money by buying spare electrical components. Youll break something eventually. And dont think for one second you wont grt some intermittent bs problem thatll test fine but screw with you once the cables are back how they were trained.

Follow Jhucke's advice. If the wires are broken there will be some spark....... Many times it will crank find on trailer, Once you start riding it is ok, until you hit waves, the bouncing will cause the strands to pull apart and you will start to lose spark. Cut the wire back 1/2 inch, tug on the strands, if any pull out, cut back to that distance, keep trying. Then go test ride. If you have to cut to where the plug wires are tight, then replace. Hint, Order a Kawi 750 coil. Use to be they were much cheaper than the Yamaha 701 coil. If you can find a Yamaha 760 coil this is even better. The coils themselves rarely go bad. Its the wires.

Just letting those know who dont...my electrical box got saltwater in it at one point and corroded lots of parts inside. What would be the best part to replace (relating to spark) that goes bad through corrosion?

Did you clean the grounds and any corroded connections? I would do that first.

Ok will do. So i cut the wire back 1/2 inch from the boots or from the coil itself?
You pull the spark boots off/clip them 1/2" or so and reinstall new boots. Best advice is to clean all connections inside the ebox and systematically check if you are getting power where it needs to be or if you have excessive resistance on a circuit. If you must throw parts at it for diagnosis, I would probably start with a coil, but heed BK's advice on that first.

Edit: I saw you were having issues with your SS switch. You should make sure to rule that out because if it is malfunctioning, it can cause a no spark scenario. Bypass the start button. Additionally, just a note, if you press the start button for a second, let off, and see one spark, could indicate a bad wire in stator which you can test and replace the problem potentially.

Okay. Makes sense. I already went through the E-box and everything seems to be functioning besides the coil. I have one on the way and I guess I will see once i try it out. I am still trying to figure out how to bypass the kill switch though.

This is a really good thread, first thing it goes over how to bypass kill switch. Just be warned, if it starts with the black and white wire unplugged, the red button will NOT stop the engine (bypassed) and so you must turn your idle screw all the way down or connect the black/white wire plug back together and you can stop it then.
