1997 WB2 starter removal....help

Hi guys, I'm new here and hope to get some much needed help. I need to remove my starter motor to repair/replace. Cannot find video or simple straight-forward instructions anywhere. I have loosened both ring and muffler bolts, exhaust ring, exhaust hose but not sure if there are more bolts . I want to be cautious before forcing and damaging components. Any links or comprehensive instructions would be appreciated. Thank you

Just went through this on mine. There is one exhaust mounting bolt (that you can’t see) on the back of the exhaust above the rear of the starter. You’ll have to feel for it. But honestly, it would have been easier just to remove the engine. It’s a royal PITA when you reassemble the exhaust with the engine in the hull.

Hi Mike, not what I wanted to hear...lol. Yes I was considering removing the complete engine especially because of the possible re-assembly struggle. Do you have a video or detailed instruction on the engine removal procedure? Its one of those 1st attempts where I need guidance and then will do it with my eyes closed. PITA, definitely but I am up to the challenge.

I don’t know of any videos. Sorry.

It’s a very easy process. Just unbolt the electrical and lay the box on top of the motor. Remove the carbs AND intake which will make more room to get it out. Disconnect the water lines and the motor mount bolts. The motor will come right out.

When you put it back in you have to make sure the coupler has the proper amount of spacing. I cant recall the spec though..

Edit: looks like 2-4 mm of gap

if there are any shims between the motor mounts and engine cradle make sure you keep track of which go where.
