That's not how I was taught! I believe there are approximately 32 dialects, are there not?

edit: although I did misspell it...verstehst (I tend to spell these days as if I am speaking).

Funny thing is my grandmother has been speaking a lot of German to me lately, and she really doesn't even speak much German...she was always teaching me French! Right now she is in there talking English to someone I can't see! :scared:

Dialects don't change grammar, which was wrong in your post, in two instances.
Specifically, the inclination of verstehen and the case of du were incorrect.
No worries, both are very common mistakes - especially for native speakers of languages without cases and inclinations.

Makes sense, but interesting for many reasons...I was telling someone the other day I noticed I have been occasionally mixing up my English structure with German lately (edit: while writing English, lol). It will bother me now (so thanks, :hitwithrock:)! I was taught by one whom lived there for 20+ years...not allowed to begin writing until after nine months of verbal instruction....English was not permitted from day one...the individual was extremely strict (High German). I never threw away any notes, but they are in Atlanta.

I do this on occasion, and it surprises me every time: sometimes out of nowhere, I will unconsciously sneak in a German word into my everyday English.

EDIT: I should add that changing grammar is somewhat common in spoken dialects, but never in written form.

“Verrrrrry interesting” [Colonel Klink/Hogan’s Heroes] LOL

Prob has much to do with initially learning verbally then. What you are doing seems common though, assuming German is your first language. We here (me) “ain’t” of German bloodline btw. What I mean to convey to your German import self, is that I recently noticed when writing my first language, English, it has literally read as if I am conjugating entire sentence structure of one or another within the European Language Family. Yikes!!! Hopefully grandmother refrains from breaking out in Latin anytime soon, or I am doomed to be severely chastised for my lack of skill (impressed, yet hate it when she does that)!

33" of wet heavy snow SUCKS!!

Today I spent the entire day packing the van up for the Weds night departure, being I have to work everyday from now till then. Took over 4hours of shoveling to free the superjet from its snow covered prison (8' pile in the back of pic). Then had to build a sled track on the deck to slide the superjet on snow 50' to the van, all because I could not dig a path wide enough for the beachcart. Winch in the van came in handy to pull it the last 35' that I was to dead from dragging it. All in all... spent 9hours shoveling the bikes, hitch hauler, and ski out.

I need to get the F out of the northeast!!!

It was almost 80F in Tona today.... Good news is the ski fired right up! Vans packed and the countdown is on.
