Bars
Intake grate
And change the nozzle angle.

That's all you should really need. The stock ride plate is pretty good on those things. Get some rides under your belt and then decide how you want to go from there.

I have an intake grate and bars if you need it. I can also show you how to change the nozzle angle. Shoot me a pm if you need to know more.

I had the following steering setup in this order...
stock plate stock bars
stock plate 0* bars
shortened pole -3
UMI -1 plate with 0* bars
Jetlabs OVP with fat straight bar, my bars are like -5 or -6 from stock now
(I did have the jetlabs with MX bars and did not like it, but am very happy with the jetlabs with the straight bar, haven't tried riser bars)

each step of the way I've been happier than previously. There are a lot of other options. Those are the ones I've had personal ownership experience with.

I like the OVP but some people like the swing of a regular plate. I'm a recreational rider 5'10" 200 lbs.

UMI can be found used for a great price. I think my UMi with a striaght bar (didnt use the straight bar) was $100 used. shoutout to @DAG for the hookup on the Jetlabs from the sebastain raffle.

can a ovp be used with the stock pole? What intake grate, seems everyone is getting the worx top loader. 228?

Some good advice already given. I am 6' and ~200lbs and my pole is shortened about an inch or so with a UMI standard turn plate. It's a comfortable ride position for me. The Worx 228 is for the '08+ but I have a 201 on my '08 and it seems to work just fine.

I will never freestyle or take it to the ocean, so flat water, I want it to hook up and turn and be uber stable. I don't have a budget. IS the factory plate long enough for my weight? Is say The worx dominator longer? I plan on ordering stuff tomorrow. I know the pole is 50mm shorter than earlier models. How short should or would you go? If I add the OVP to the stock pole, does that shorten it as well. Sorry have been out of this for 15 years so trying to catch up. being a big guy, i need all the help i can get to get the nose in the water.

Have you thought about finding an SXR? Sounds like it is more along the lines of what you want.

i just bought it, broke it in today! i know what i want it to be like but just need some direction as to whats the best options. I have been so out of the loop that i don't know what i should be looking for. I am getting the worx 228 top loader, and want an extended plate, money is not an issue, so i can splurge on a pole, flat bars, OVP just need some solid input as to what products will get me there. thanks for all the help so far:)

I would just get some zero degree bars. Research steering mod. Pole string. Look at the prowatercross ride plate and the tbm ride plates.

Hi Doug, @waxhead might be able to chim in but I believe I have read the newer SJ's if held WOT for to long build alot of heat in the cylinder due to the waterbox. If you plan on riding it hard and fast for periods of time you may consider looking at a OEM pre 2008 RN SJ waterbox or something aftermarket. I know you said no engin mods just yet but something to keep in mind if/when you get a pipe.

If you are interested in the JETTLab OVP Steering we can mock one up for you to try before you buy to make sure you like it. PS: Welcome to the forum and looking forward to seeing you on Lake Wylie.

I really liked blowsion bolt on sponsons (tubbies) on my 08 superjet, made it a bit more stable and in my oppinion turned more aggressive and got rid of the water that sprays in your face in hard turns.
I also had a shorter turn plate to make the pole setup a bit shorter and I'm tall like you are. Make sure to speed up the steering, several ways to do this.

thanks for all the help guys. i have been told the nozzle needs to be lowered to exit straight. was told its a bit high from yamaha. does anyone have a pic of the mod. i have not looked yet, will be tearing apart wednesday. I think there is a plate that needs to be longed or hole moved to move the nozzle angle back to straight?

I have found the thing that made the ski most stable was shortening the pole. Im 5'10, went -1 (steering), then -4 (pole), then about -6 (steering again). I can almost stand on my ski at idle now (200lbs). I used to wonder how the flatwater guys had so much talent to keep a ski upriht going slow, but now i see that those super short poles play a major part in that.

At about -6, its still great for boat chasing and bouys. I think it may actually be easier on my back too. I thought it would be harder but i think it takes less core to keep the nose down. Combined with a 4" pole pad, its a pretty easy ride (should probably have a shorter pad but for now its uncomfortable to lean that far.)

I'm 6'7", 230ibs riding a '14 SJ. Left the stock plate on, switched to the worx intake grate, new pole spring, did the quick steer mod with the old style cable and added footholds on the sides and front so my lanky ass can hang on. That's all and I'm done except for a bilge pump so I can stop worrying on subs.

Resulted in a ski I trust miles from the ramp and one I can joyride on for hours.

If you just want reliability and nice handling I wouldn't go overboard with anything until you've got a lot more tray time. It'll never be easier to ride than it is right now.

I've been watching this thread for awhile as I am your size plus 10lbs and own a 2014 SJ and think I could help. Heres my thoughts...

1) If you're lacking in the balance/coordination department, throw some blowsion destroyers on there. My buddy had those on a 2012 and it made it super stable, carved like a razor, etc. I wouldn't say I would need them, but if you want to make it stable that is a must. Double tubbies for the win!

2) if you think you have decent balance/coordination, just get some zero degree bars and tray time. When I first came over from an 08 SXR to SJs, I thought they were unstable too, mainly the 91-07 superjets. I always thought these 08 plus ones were like a mini SXR.

3) As far as better steering, I have read there is a ton to do. Old style steering cable, relocate ball on the nozzle, etc. I plan on relocating the ball on the nozzle. I think being bigger we can throw the skis around better, but the steering mods would help.

4) I and many others think the stock plate is just fine, if you're going to do anything cut it flush with the hull.

5) I think the stock pole is fine. it is already -2 and they are pretty strong. i will eventually replace mine, but it is money wasted to me right now. Especially if you are just goofing off with the SJ, I doubt you will be breaking it anytime soon.

6) replace crappy plastic intake grate

My recommendations for you:

-tubbies ONLY if you think you need them
-Zero degree bars
-Cut ride plate
-Steering mods
-Tray time!!!
-intake grate (tons of options)

Save your money and don't blow a ton of money if you are just goofing off with the ski. Use that money for gas/oil and ride the poop out of it. People will tell you to buy all this stuff and in the end the best thing you could have done was spent money on gas and oil and riding!
