yes you need to find a 07 and earlier cable

No a new steering cable is not required.
The 96-07 cable can be installed in a 2008+and it allows additional steering throw but it is not a requirement when installing an aftermarket handlepole.
Be sure to align the cable properly so it does not bottom out before hitting the steering stop. Yes, it can be set up to work properly.
I used a 2013 with rrp pole and original cable for a while, and my 2015 has older cable swap.

RRP has slots for both types of cables, but pre 08 is better.
