Surfriding 3 inch setback pump project pics.UPDATED with review

thought it would be interesting to see if moving the pump back 3 inch would give more leverage in surf turns, compact more aerated surf break whitewater and hookup better even in slow speed situations in surf, after seeing how well the xfs did with the pump back this seems like a cheap solution,Im doing it this time with a stock ported pump, with a wb1 drive shaft, because it works with a sj,I have a 142 setback mag im going to try next if this works out as well as I think it will.I still need to have a a drive shaft made for that setup.

This doesnt cost much but its a pain in the ass to do especially with thrust trim.everything is in the way of every single bolt and alot of grinding needs to be done.if you think putting a 148 mag in a sj is rough, look out trying this setup out.

rewelded the trim ring holes solid and kawisized the issue with a older thrust trim to rid the slop, props to Jon for that idea

grinded and shimmed 8 ways from sunday and installed

good bit further out the back now for a little bit more leverage and holding alot more water'

Totally sweet !!! I started the same sort of deal but needed the parts for another project, couch bolts (longer) with inserts in the wear ring, (I like your idea better) I think it was the blaster shaft that fit , and T nuts for the pump mount fasteners as I don't have a tig. Can't wait to hear how your mega set back dose !

Nice to see you freeride boys finally catching up to the times! We have been doing this for years in the mod class. I had Skat make me solid stainless spacers years back and used them on our 8mil TJ motors. That was the only way we could keep the power to the water. It helps with hook up, especially when you get into the big hp motors. Just be careful, it will make your steering much tighter.

Tem,id like to try one of your pump inserts in this for the ultimate stock pump setup,Josh was telling me at wavedaze you had stockers hooking up close to mag pumps, with a setback like this id bet they would compact the hell out of some whitewater,im trying to decide what size nozzle bore to run with this now, leaving it at 82 to start testing.I dont need super explosive low end,Im running a 5 mill bb,so its plenty for surf,I just wana get the stocker to build as much pressure as possible and have the best hookup in the foamy stuff. the steering spacer does push the load back on the cable,im looking for some kind of hollow alum tube now I can clamp to the alum dowel spacer, its taped and pushed right up on the steering fitting but the front of the cable is the weak link id have it go back over the steering cable past the overlap spot a few inches to reinforce the extra length.

Scott whats up with the 142 prop, did you ever get in touch with him about that,I wana try this set back mag pump after this,I got a shaft being made for it.

A setback pump (set back mag for example) doesn't involve glass work either.
The idea is to move the impeller/stator section back so that more water can stack in front of the impeller.

I guess that is true, I was thinking more along the lines of the 08+ SJ. That said, I doubt "stacking" a few cubic inches of water will do much to improve anything.

I haven't personally run a back-to-back test, so I can't say.
But that's Skat's sales pitch on the set back mags.
That little but of extra water volume allows more water reserve for the pump. I suppose it would make a difference on rough water hookup and speed.

E: damn, Boris beat me to it.

Btw, the purpose of the 08 set back pump is the same:

1. Lengthen the water column in front of the impeller
2. Allow the pump to hook up longer when the hull leaves the water
3. Faster turning.

If you do pump mod it will hook up like crazy but you may have to go down on pitch or open up the reduction nozzle as it def. loads everything up more. I want to see if it will work with a big 900-1000cc motor some time. What do you think about extending the base end with some sch 80 1" or something along thoughts lines ? needs to be bomber fer sure.

also keep in mind the skat setback mags are only one inch, this is 3 inches,so the water in front of the prop should take longer to empty the pump when you go in the air, im also hoping for alot better compaction of whitewater.

Tem what do you mean extending the base end?this hooker is a 10/16 but ive always thought i could use a 9/15 maybe even flatened a little with a pump insert
