3500 for minty 89

Always wanted one of these and recently found a bone stock 89 for sale, freshwater only and stored indoors, guy wants 3500. Do you think Im payin too much for this thing? They seem like they are hard to find and when I do find one they tend to be roached.

A 650sx for $3500 is insanity. But, that’s just my opinion.

The more I read about these things, the less this sounds like a good deal lol. Im gonna try and talk him down to the 2k ish range or just run. Sounds like it will be pretty expensive to modify the thing, or just keep it running.

Used to being able to find stock superjet stuff for cheap

A stock 650 doesn.t have enough power. The hull is more difficult to ride than an SXR or Superjet and it has much less lateral grip. It is easy to update the power but it still wont turn very well at high speeds. The 650s pads were designed into the hull so it looks "even more" horrible when they are torn or missing. For me its best to find the best hull as cheap as possible and update the engine and pump. You can get one going 50mph with a fresh 750 engine for $2500-3000 in parts plus the hull.

In my opinion the 650sx is the most undesirable ski out there and probably wouldn't burden myself with it regardless of the price. But if you like it, don't let anyone else tell you what you like. Get what you want.

I haven’t paid over $650 for all of my X2’s. I love the damn things, bought one for 150 bucks last year that was buried in a garage for 19 years.

Get him down to $3,000 if you can but buy it.

Our X2 hurts my neck, but I love the bottom hull so much that I want to take a mold off of it. Mint is mint. They aren't making any more new 32 year old X2's.

Personally, I like to start from mint and stock. Because things will break on a 32 year old ski. And it is easier to fix a ski which is stock.

Each one of those hull pieces is nearly impossible to find oem nos or used mint condition.

Pay fair market price for it. Fair market price is what a willing buyer will pay which a willing seller will accept neither of which are under a compulsion to buy or to sell.

What price we all paid for skis previously has nothing to do with the current market prices. Do your searches for comparison and don't be afraid to spend more than what others would spend. It is your happiness at issue. Not theirs. We all have limited time with work and whatnot. And we are all only here on this planet for a little while. So, you do what makes sense for you, your family and your other obligations.

Personally, nothing makes me work harder than after a great day of jet skiing with my wife.

Move the steering aft 6", that will soften the ride.

What hurts my neck is that the bars are low so that I have to bend my neck to look up while I ride it standing up. Moving the bars closer to my body would make me less hunched over? Interesting idea. Thank you. It really is a good yacht steep/deep wake surfer.

It all depends on how big you are. If over 6' and 250 then leave it alone. Shorter/lighter riders need to get the center of gravity back a little. It sounds like your bars are too low for you.

If those decals are in fact original, that’s not an ‘89, it’s a ‘91 or ‘92. You could ask him to take a picture of the HIN and verify that.

Also, if it is an ‘89, those are the least desirable years of the X2 as Kawasaki tried to cost down the steering that year and went from the “squirrel cage” steering to a direct cable steer. The cables break fairly often and I haven’t experienced it first hand, but I’d heard the steering response feels sluggish. It must have been bad enough because they switched back to the squirrel cage steering half way through the ‘90 production year. Basically admitting it was a poor design without actually saying it. Something needs to be fairly bad/wrong for an OEM to make a change like that half way through a model year instead of just waiting for the next model year to implement the change/update.

Most OEMs use the cheapest possible materials and have incredibly low assembly standards. Management loses no sleep making a customers life miserable. The 89 direct steer wasnt a bad idea, just very poorly implemented.
