440 pump rattle on stand

The 440 I just picked up (with 550 conversion) makes a very loud low frequency rattling noise on the stand. I can feel a lot of vibration from the pump area.

I've searched and found different causes from shaft "walking" around the bearing (needs grease) to splines of impeller not perfectly matching shaft, and impeller is rattling on shaft.

The first sounds plausible, seconds seems unlikely.

My other 440 purs like a kitten on the stand, and does not make this terrible noise.

It would probably be ok in the water, but I'd prefer to make it right.

Should I rebuild the pump? Any recommendations on where to buy a rebuild kit for a 440 pump?

My 550 sx does the same out of the water. I was told it was normal and it was slack in the splines on the shaft and impeller bore. I heard it from day one and that was almost ten years ago

I picked up a grease gun and shot some grease into the grease fitting. I expected to feel some resistance as the bushing filled up with grease, but I didn't and after a few pumps A bunch of grease came out from the impeller area. Hmm is that bad? Did I blow out a seal? I also pumped about 6 pumps into the shaft bearing and didn't see anything come out. Figured six pumps was enough to stop.

Engine seems sound, but when running I had a very unstable idle... sort of like BING......... BING BING........ BING..... BING BING BING........... BING.... and when I gave it throttle it bogged and RPMS did not increase. There was a ton of blue smoke.. if it were rich I wouldn't expect the sporadic idle.

Not sure whats up with that, I checked to make sure the crank wasn't twisted. Have not checked flywheel key.

It would probably not even start if the key were sheared right?

Thanks

Yeah, only thing is, my 440 doesn't do this. It idles quietly no rattle or thunking.

Why would the new 440 do it? Would like to fix it while I have the engine out.
