Yipper skipper. Here's what happens when:

you are in a hurry to ride
you don't wait for your fancy ignition
your carbs are too lean
your compression is too high for your octane level
you use crummy oil

I know it all too well, went from MSD total loss to modded stock with stator advanced, too much timing, too many rpms, etc.

Any damage to the cylinders?

I had a little damage to the cylinders, a couple of grooves that I could feel with my fingernail. The pistons were already at max clearance, so I ordered a couple of wisecos. They should be here on Thursday.

The deto was so bad that there was 0 (zero) compression on the rear cylinder.

MSD should be here this week and I'm having the pistons bored on Friday.

Anybody know how to use a timing light to time the motor?

Why not use the built-in MSD timing checker? It's got a timing LED on the brain.

i tried using a timing light on my 650 sx cause i tried eveything and couldn't get it to run. i tried using the timing light and it was off quiet a bit. later on i was told by a mechanic you have to run the motor about 3000 rpms to get the timing light to be accurate. so it makes sense that my timing was off when i was trying to crank it over but don't know if this has any truth to it, just what i was told.

Crank seems ok.

MSD timing checker . . . I don't know . . . I need more info. I think I have to set up the static timing at something like 24.5 initial which I believe is about .170 inches before TDC.

I need all the parts on the bench ready to assemble and then I'll call someone who knows what's up . . .

I've hear that there may be 5 degrees timing difference depending on the msd ignition or flywheel . . .

Like I said I need more info.

Give Paul a call. He faxed me the entire manual for that same ignition before. Valuable info.
I believe there may be a five degree difference.

Yeah. I've been talking to Paul almost daily. He's a life saver. I have the manual as well . . . just gotta get my poop in a pile.

Should have everything by Friday . . . test run Saturday or Sunday.
